    Super High Nitrates Suddenly....

Okay, I gravel vac'd and uprooted my plants to clean the gravel. I found some interesting things.... In my wisteria, I found several leafs in the middle that was brown and covered in slime under the leaf. I found at least 10 leafs like that. And in the middle of my anubias plant I found some...

    Diy canister filter.

Personally, as a fellow DIY canister filter owner powered by a MagDrive\PondMaster pump. Move the pump so it is pushing. I had mine on the pull like yours, after a week or so I noticed that it was making a ton of noise and when I looked at it, most of the casing had warp badly and was leaking...

    Super High Nitrates Suddenly....

I did another test just a few minutes ago. Nitrates are about 60PPM. But I'd swear that my wisteria grew inches over night... I think I'm going to have to uproot my plants and wash the gravel as good as I can get it with old tank water. I don't think that it will do to much, but it...

    Super High Nitrates Suddenly....

Well, there was not a whole lot of gunk built up in the bottom of my filter. But everything is now super clean. Changed out an other 50% of water as well. Nitrates currently at about 30PPM. Hopefully in the morning, the nitrates will stay there. Just have to wait and see.

    Super High Nitrates Suddenly....

The last time I cleaned the filter media was last Saturday. Though you do have me going down a rabbit hole now... While the filter media was changed out recently, I think a design flaw maybe my issue. My filter is a DIY canister, There is a way for heavy deposits not to be captured. I could...

    Super High Nitrates Suddenly....

I gravel vac the gravel every week. Then once a month I connect my gravel vac to my canister filter,(Pulls more junk out than just gravity). While connected to the filter, I move the decor around to get to the places I normally cant get to. Next I clean or change the filter media so the junk...

    Super High Nitrates Suddenly....

I agree that I should of researched some before adding to my tank. I was just one of those days where thinking like that was not in the cards for me. After a massive water change,(~50 gallons fresh to the ~24G volume). And some help from a friend. (Only a fellow fish lover will help in a...

    Super High Nitrates Suddenly....

While I was picking up some supplies for my take, I notice Fluval ClearMax. Never Used it before, did not do any research, saw what it removed. Figured that since my tap water is normally high in Phosphates and Nitrates (~30PPM). I figured it could not hurt. The store was closing so I just...

    Mag Drive 5

Okay for my DIY filter that I have going now, I had two 200GPH pumps. One before that filter and one after the filter. I really did not like this setup, I just wanted one pump to run this filter. That and I had plans to use the others for another DIY project. So I purchased a Mag Drive 5...

Oh boy... Looking for some advice.....

Thanks! I've have moved them to a 5Gal all by themselves and tons of hiding places to limit stress with a basic bubble filter (Seeded with BB) and I have been feeding them a mix of crushed flake, blood worms, and brine shrimp three times a day. So far they are eating it and growing faster than I...

Oh boy... Looking for some advice.....

Well, since the babies are almost larger than what the cherry barbs can eat I'm not to worried about that. I think I'll get a breeders net so I can buy some time rearranging my QT so that it is fry friendly. (No heat and filter is currently off). The thing that gets me is the parents are not...

Oh boy... Looking for some advice.....

So, I went and started my PWC and gravel vac today when I noticed 2 small things moving around my rock pile and water wisteria. Sure enough my creamsicle mollies now have off spring! YAY! Was not trying to breed them, but still cool!! Then it hit me. While I had fish ever since I was little. I...

    Diy filter idea advice

I think you concept is sound, I've seen others do exactly this. Although, some of the problems that I've seen some others (Myself) run into are. 1) Depending on the micron size of the particulate filter, you may want a filter material that will filter somewhere in between your intake sponge...

    DIY PVC Filter

The design part can be either easy or hard for some people. For me it is rather easy. Like BlackMagic, I could come up with designs likes these in my sleep. I only spent about 20 minutes in how I wanted everything laid out. (Should of spend a few minutes more, I have one flaw right now. But...

    DIY PVC Filter

I promised videos and here they are... Two things.... I just my phone to record this. For some reason the video and audio tends to drop out. Second, I never recorded something that I did myself before. I'm nervous and my speech is far from perfect. So please try ignore all the "umms" awkward...

    DIY PVC Filter

There is only one pump, it is a Marineland 1100. It is located behind my tank, on the right hand corner. With it there, it is a strait shot up into the return for the tank. Like it said, Hopefully I'll have more pics and a video of the entire filter and it's connections.

    DIY PVC Filter

I glued the pvc with a normal pvc glue, and used 100% acetone to clean the connections. After the glue dried, I flushed it with tap water a few hours every day for a week to get the glue odor out. Then I let it sit in the open air for a few days while my pump arrived. When it finally did, I ran...

    DIY PVC Filter

I'm actually thinking of wrapping some quilt bating around the micron filter. Hoping that this will help the micron filter last a bit longer. (not an issue right now, just thinking ahead). I don't like the small amount of polyfil that I have right now.

    DIY PVC Filter

I'm using a intake from a old aquatech 5-15 filter connected to some 5/8 tubing then going directly to my filter connecting by 1/2 pvc with a valve. After going though the filter, the water exits though another 1/2 pvc with a valve. Then it hits the marineland 1100 pump. (~300GPH) It finally...

    DIY PVC Filter

Well, it's the cleanest water I've seen in a 10G :D My fish seem to do nothing but play in the output of the filter. Very fun to watch

    DIY PVC Filter

It was a fun DIY, that was for sure. I just purchased a 20G-Long so when I finally have that one about to get going. I'm going to disassemble this filter since it will be going to the new tank and take more pics and measurements.. (Kinda overkill for a 10G).
