I'm helping out a friend set up a new aquarium. It is a ten gallon tank. She has had fish before but had gotten rid of them for a while. Since we're a few hours apart, I'm trying to help get it set up without making a ton of trips to help. My idea is to help get it cycled with a seeded filter...

I was using their food. It works much better for internal parasites compared to the dissolving tablets as the fish actually eat the medication. The dissolving tablets may work for internal parasites somewhat but are better off used for external parasites.

It didn't have any effect on my BB! My only complaint about it was I had to crush it up a lot, otherwise it sank to the bottom and my shrimp got to it and ran off with it before my fish could get any.

It also depends on the individual temperament of the fish. My danios were happy in a group of four, but they are even happier with seven.

The man cave tank? I just watched it and I thought they said it was near 80 gallons.

A sparkling may be ok, but i'm not too familiar with them. Someone else can answer that. Definitley no dwarf gouramis though. With an 8 gallon i'd go with some nano fish like danios or tetras, but thats just me!!

I don't think i'd put any gouramis in an eight gallon tank. Seems a little small for them!!

Just buy a new thermometer, they're pretty cheap. It's better then playing a guessing game like you are now.

Update: Some pictures finally!!! Tank is fully stocked, aside from some RCS if I can ever find them! I think my favorite fish are my blue dwarf gouramis, so fun to watch!

I'd like to get some Java Moss and Red Cherry Shrimp for my 20 gallon tank. A baseball sized clump of Java moss would be a great size, or somewhere around there. I don't know how many RCS to get for my size tank... maybe a dozen or so? Ship to zip code is 48049 Thanks!

I have the 20 gallon marineland kit. I love it. The LED lights are really cool and plenty bright enough. The night mode is really neat also-- especially if you have glofish and certain decorations-- a few of mine from Petsmart really glow under the night LED lights!

In tossing around some other ideas in my head I'm liking the idea of a pair of dwarf gouramis as a centerpiece fish. As of now I still only have the 5 zebra danios and 2 glofish as well as the ghost shrimp. Would I be able to get a pair of dwarf gouramis? Also tossing around the idea of...

Update: All the fish are doing well now, no more deaths and water conditions have remained great!

You need a heater for any tropical fish, including glofish. Fish need a pretty constant temperature and without a heater you won't get that.

Thanks for the responses guys. The glofish and zebras were schooling together, but after I lost the last danio one became aggressive. Just went to the LFS and got 3 new danios. They are drip acclimating now. This LFS seems much better than Petsmart so far (except the prices!) Will report back...

So I lost the one glofish and one danio. Somehow the danio ended up with his entire tail fin missing. Really not sure how that happened but he wasn't able to move around very well and got stuck to the filter intake, found him there in the morning. The glofish that was staying near the bottom...

Update: I added 4 zebra danios and 2 glofish as well as 5 ghost shrimp yesterday. All are doing well aside from the one glofish. It has been staying near the bottom of the tank and only swimming around every once and a while. When it does swim around it seems to get around fine. It came out...

Finally seeing blue in the nitrites!!! Went from being 5.0 to 0 in 24 hours! Going to dose again tonight. Plan is to get fish tues or wed night after a large water change to bring the nitrates to below 20 and turning the temp to 74 to 76.

I'd say do another pwc. Your test kit only shows the levels up to a certain point, even if they are much higher. Your levels must have just been really high.

5.0 is correct. I think I dosed ammonia a little higher than normal yesterday afternoon. Will just add 1 ppm of ammonia then and hope nitrites come down soon!

Nitrites are higher than 5.0 ppm tonight. Would out be best to still redose ammonia, give it a night off, or do a pwc and then redose?

Ammonia levels are still dropping to 0 in 24 hours. Nitrite levels are not increasing though and staying near.5 ppm. I'm assuming the bacteria just can't handle the load quite yet. Hopefully it will be done soon!
