    Japanese Moss Balls...

No one who has used these? I talked to a friend last night who, along with her husband, has had dozens of planted and non-planted tanks over the years and she was in the same boat as me, she had heard they starve out other algaes but didn't know how well they work or if they harm other plants...

    Aggression

K, I thought so, thanks. Are the two even compatible? the Shark and Kinfe, I mean. They are both bottom dwellers who like to hide, with the Knife being passive and the shark being territorial... I dunno, sounds like you are begging for problems.

    Aggression

Gotcha... in that case, it is prolly too small for the shark, kinfefish too, I believe, but I am not as familiar with their swimming behaviour, etc. I think 55g+ is what you should have for Redtail or Rainbow sharks, as they want a lot of space to roam, and claim as their own.

    Aggression

Sharks claim territory at the bottom of the tank and as they get older (and bigger) they tend to claim more and more. The shark is probably not wanting to share hiding places with the knifefish... ...also I don't know what 110 liters is, cause, like many Americans, I am too stubborn to learn...

    Tiger Barb's and Oto's

Oto's do best in small schools. They are pretty shy, so if your tigers get aggressive with them, they may have to be moved. Also, Oto's are often very fragile, make sure you acclimate them slowly to the tank.

    Japanese Moss Balls...

It's these: Marimo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I can't find the source I saw before talking about how they starve out other algaes though.

    Japanese Moss Balls...

SO I keep seeing those little moss balls in the stores, and I have read up on them a bit. I guess they are a fancy kind of algae that stays in the ball and sucks away all the nutrients that other algae would eat, thus stopping algae growth (in theory) Wondering if anyone has used these and if...

    Looking for Inspiration...

Maybe, trouble is that the tank I got is an older one and the glass lid peices leave a full inch and a half I would say all the way across the back, except where the glass centerpiece is built. Which means I have 2, 20"x1.5" gaps in the back.

    Tiger Barb's and Oto's

In my experience, Tiger Barbs if allowed to school in groups 6-8 at least tend to leave most other fish alone. Question though, are your greens schooling with the others?

    Water Temp Problem?

Is the tank getting a lot of direct sunlight? That could result in the water temp rising and your algae at the same time...

    Looking for Inspiration...

My 75g has about an inch to an inch and a half of open space along the back for filters, etc. I don't know if there is something you can get to close that off, or if anyone knows an easy DIY way to do it... But if I can close that I will Do a Rainbow Shark and a school of Tiger Barbs (Green if I...

    Looking for Inspiration...

Perhaps. I might consider letting the shark and whatever tankmates have the 75g. I am still about 2 weeks from stocking that. And I won't get the 55g till tomorrow, so it won't be any time too soon.

I was thinking about some Turq. Severums or blood parrots maybe. both can usually take care of themselves without starting fights.

Any way to tell how aggressive he is humanely? I mean, should I try moving a few fish in with him from the community tank and see how he reacts for a day or so? Sounds kinda mean if he turns out to be a jerk.

Actually, if the filters are good, I am thinking of going with a Rainbow Shark. What do well with them? Maybe a few med size American Cichlids?

    Looking for Inspiration...

Ok, so I have a 75g tank planted and cycling and have plans for a community tank all set. Mostly some schooling fish and a few Bolivian Rams... I just got a great deal on a 55g. comes with a pair of filters, but I have not seen them yet, so I don't know what kind or how serviceable they...

    NH in tap water

If the tank is cycled it shouldn't be a big problem, the bacteria should be able to process the ammonia (just like the ammonia your fish and plants release). I don't think .5ppm is gonna be too bad as long as you aren't doing major pwc's, like 70-80%

    Aethiomastacembelus sp

I have never kept the Spiney Eels personally, but everything I have heard and read says they do fine with Mbuna. I have heard of people using larger species of Eels with Mbuna and being ok, so I don't think you should have an issue.

    buying a used tank

I just got a 75g with a nice stand and almost everything needed other than a filter on CL for 200. I also know in my area there are a lot of other 50+ gallon tanks with stands in the 100-200 range.

    75g Stocking Suggestions...

Well, thanks to everyone for the advice... In addition to my original plans, I am going to persue the Bolivian Ram, and likely a few mollies. Stocking should start around the 26th, I'll let you know what I end up picking.

    75g Stocking Suggestions...

That's interesting... So maybe 6 Otos 6-8 Cories (Emerald/Panda) 8 Black Phantoms 8 Cherry Barbs (I have experience with the Cherries and in groups of 6+ they are very peaceful) 8 Guppies (prolly blue for the coloring) And would you...

    75g Stocking Suggestions...

I am staying away from the Shark idea. I have thought about a 'centerpiece' type fish, but between aggression and the fact that my tank is a little older and for the time being is going to have a few openings near the filter tubes in the back, I don't wanna risk it. I have heard too many...

    75g Stocking Suggestions...

I am not new to aquariums, though I haven't had any fish in several years. I have a planted, 75g tank cycling right now, it has good filtration (Fluval 205 and 305) and I am going out of town in a week and a half, so I am waiting a couple weeks to stock (should be well cycled) I want to do a...
