What’s going on with my sand

Cyano is pretty common in a new tank. Looks like you have good circulation so keep up with frequent water changes to keep the nutrient levels low and it should eventually die off.

Tank is doing well now. About 4 yrs ago I was on vacation and had a power outage. Power was out about 36 hrs and not being home things went south. I lost most of the SPS and the sebae anemone that was about 15 yrs old. The majestic angel died shorty after I got home. About 3 yrs ago I bought the...

New to SW- Ammonia really high

You will be cycled when you have 0 nitrite and 0 ammonia. Keep doing water changes. There's an old saying..."the solution to pollution is dilution". Be patient and keep doing water changes and don't add any more livestock till your nitrite and ammonia is 0 and nitrate drops more.

The majestic has adapted very nicely. It eats like a pig and is turning into the boss of the tank. Lunch time!

Anyone dosing with powderd Calcium and Soda Ash?

I use DowFlake calcium chloride (Ice melt) and Arm&Hammer baking soda. I bake the Arm&Hammer in the oven at 350° for 1 hour. That turns the sodium bicarbonate into sodium carbonate (soda ash). Just make sure whatever you use for calcium and alk is "food grade". An Improved Do-it-Yourself...

Just in case you thought anemones were safe

I agree 100%. Every reef fish (excluding clowns and some damsels) knows to stay away from anemones. That tang may have been disoriented or spooked and swam into it, but I do not believe the anemone actively captured it. They aren't ambush hunters, but they will latch onto anything that swims...

    What is your oldest coral...

These mushrooms are about 25 yrs old. I also have star polyps and various zoas that are over 20 yrs old and the tan monti cap is over 10 yrs old.

Help with my sump and tank

Just keep in mind if you have a power outage, the tanks will backflow into the lowest part of your setup, which also looks to be the smallest tank. Make sure that tank can handle whatever amount of water backflows....or it will flood that tank.

Help with my sump and tank

I would try to simplify everything starting by using the 75 as your sump/refugium instead of 2 seperate tanks. A true DSB has sand at least 6" thick. If you plan on using that much, you can mix black with white in the sump/refuge. If you are going to tee off your main return pump, use 2 reactors...

It depends on what corals you want to keep. You are probably fine now for soft corals and LPS. If you want to go with SPS you probably want to add quite a bit more flow. Maybe a couple more Koralia's or even look into the Jebao WP-40.

The 4 on the sides are regular Koralia K4's (1250 gph) and the 1 in the center is a K3 (850 gph). They are all on all the time.

Maybe some soft corals or LPS, but it won't bother any SPS.

    What salt are you using?

Regular Instant Ocean works fine for me. Been using it for over 25 yrs.

I just bought 5050 rgb led strips from ebay. Can i use this in my coral?

150 diodes divided by 36w = 0.24w per diode. That will barely penetrate the water. It's OK for fish, but won't support any type of coral.

    Waving Hands?

The purple mat is a dead give away. It's a type of star polyp - Briareum spp.

    cal & mag sups

I use DowFlake Ice Melt (calcium chloride) for calcium and MagFlake Ice Melt (magnesium chloride) for my mag supplement. I also use Arm & Hammer baking soda for my alk supplement. Tang Compatibility.

The sailfin will outgrow your 55g tank quickly....but you probably already know that. Anyway, you want to know if you can add a yellow tang with it? Being they are in the same zebrasoma sp. family, if you had a 180 or bigger, maybe. In a 55...no.

    Wht is this growth?

    Feather duster.

    Swallowtail angelfish

I would have to say no. I have a Lamarck that's been in my tank about 5 yrs. When I tried to add another one, even tho it was larger, the established one beat it to death. Mixing genicanthus angels (Larmarck, swallowtail, bellus, watanabei, etc) probably isn't a good idea.
