    That is odd. I have used Florabase in one tank for about 4 years and love the stuff. What you describe is what happened to me when I tried fluorite. Guess you can't count on consistency too much.

    substrate question

    The old saying is 1 pound per gallon. Of course this does not take into account the depth of the tank. Is this a 48" x 18" 90gal or is it longer? If it is 48" x 18" I would go with about 70 to 80 pounds. I do like a think gravel bed so keep that in mind. Hope that helps.
