    Discus fish

Don't get me wrong, it requires commitment and research. Ihave had tanks all my life and have three now. Cycling, correct water parameters, etc are all must haves but they are after all tropical fish and its not neurosurgery.

    Discus fish

I keep it at 84. Some fish, like the rummynose, cardinal tetras, some Cory cats, rams. But most won't tolerate it you just have to research them. I use two otb filters. Don't remember what kind but they are each large enough for a 75 gal by themselves.

    Discus Questions

Hey RAH, welcome to discus fever! I have five in a 75 gal with substrate, driftwood, plants, rummynose and cardinals. They are very sensitive too water quality and like it hot. I keep my tank at 84 and do weekly water changes of about 30%. I ordered them from discus madness online and was...

Most Rewarding Part of Owning an Aquarium?

Never having to say there's nothing to watch when you have 300 channels of CRAP on TV. Being able to care for "difficult" species of fish with some success. Part I could do without - high prices of everything good for your aquarium!

Where Is the Best Place to Buy Fish? Small Store, Mail Order or Big Chain?

I use all resouces available to me. I have two Mom n Pop lfs I prefer since they actually have some knowledge too share. I will be buying my discus online since I can get a MUCH better price. I have not personally used liveaquaria, but I have a saltie friend that uses them exclusively and has...

    German Blue Ram

Just keep in mind that the gold and blue three spot gourami are very aggressive ime. Especially if you end up with two males. Opaline and pearl gourami are the most peaceful imo. My pH hangs around 6.8 but I agree that if propwrly acclimated they should do well.

    German Blue Ram

Well, I don't know about all your fish, but I have my rams in a 55 gal with black neons, opaline gourami, 1 platy, von rio tetras, and some emerald corries and everyone gets along well. Unless they try to get in Ram territory and then there's some chasing, but that's about it. I keep the temp...

    ready to learn!

I have recently aquired a 75gal tank that was saltwater. I have begun my research and am planning a malawi/mbuna tank. I was wondering if I could/should try to re-use the live rock and crushed coral substrate if it was thoroughly rinsed? Any other advice would be welcome.

Is there such a thing as black algae?

Hey Magikalgirl, I have been fighting this stuff for a while. Very hard to eradicate. American Flagfish will eat it like candy! If you can find them. They Hydrogen peroxide should work, but I was scared to try it as it can hurt your fish if you're not carefull. Feeding less, less light...

    Orange von rios

Hey There, I have some von rios and have not had this problem. Mine are in a 55gal with blue rams, black neons, corry cats, and a opaline gourami. They do chase each other a lot, but I haven't noticed nipping. I was only able to start with 4 however, and until I was able to increase the...

    Rainbowfish Question...

I know what you mean, I've had several varieties of "australian rainbow fish" I think yours may be a what is called a Murray River rainbow. Mine were lake ktubu and boesmani. And how's it going in NC for you today? Cool enough?

How to Have a Happy 10gal

Thanks George9, yeah did some more research and it looks like the gourami might want it warmer than the corries anyway.

How to Have a Happy 10gal

What's up Everybody! I find myself with a new 10gal tank from Santa and I can't decide what to do. I am experienced and have a 55 gal currently with gourami, rams, black neons, red flames, and emerald cory cats and I've kept aquariums for years. Here are a couple pics of the 10 as it cycles so...

    Opaline/Blue Gourami question

First, what up Carolina. My opaline does this as well, I have researched it and found that they will darken/lighten when stressed, excited, or breeding. When I brought mine home he was very dark, but now stays light normally. Hope it goes well for you.

4 Days Till my GBRs Come in!

Hope all is well with your rams! I know when I decided to get some, it was a lengthy process that was well worth the effort. Had mine for about 5 months now and I LOVE them. Good luck!

    Brush algae

wow, bummer, I've had it for quite a while. It's very hard to eradicate, some things I've tried and found in research are - Live plants n lots of em, they help remove excess nutrients from the water. Make sure you're not overfeeding, this can promote algae growth. Killifish (?) such as...

    Rams and Cory's??

Thanks, I bought mine pretty large, about 5" and had him for about 10-12 months and I'd guess its close to 7" now. I think it's more that it's the biggest fish in the tank and its fully mature acting. used to be kind of shy but not anymore! He's going from my 55gal to my bro's 75 so he should...
