I just read the thread so might be off but if the sump ran dry then you pump was pushing more water then what your overflow could handle. I think you said you had only 1 overflow running. If that's the case I would get both going before you turn ur pump on.

They will be fine. The only time you might have to worry about them starving over night is if there fry.

About the bamboo, it can be submerged as I had mine grow great that way for almost a year. The leaves will start to grow out of the water and looked nice. But if you want to take ot out and want a sturdy plant, I would vote for anubius or crypts. Both grow slow but look nice once they start...

are you using sand as a substrate? could be some sand up on the leaves maybe.

Tank looks great. I think it helps that the plants are full and lush before you aquascaped the 55. Makes it a little easier to see how the tanks would be as it matured.

You can look in ur back yard, streams and rivers. Just boil them to kill everything

a fx5 should be enough for that tank. but that just my opinon.

all in reality you can prob get a couple of each, or add some bigger body cichlid like a severum. Tiger shovelnose gets to be 4' and need a big area to turn around, Thats why I suggested a lima shovel nose. they get about a foot I think.

nice I am a fan of the gold gourami. Now that pleco does get very large and will grow out that tank. It will be a while but sometimes its hard to get rid of a giant pleco. I would also consider filling out the school of loaches.

what you do with a tank really depends on the fish you plan to put in there. a 55 gal tank is a nice tank and can do a fair amount. So once you decided on what fish people can give a better say on what they would do. I personally like driftwood and plants if the fish in the tank allow it.

is that 3 ft tall? If so you could go with lima shovel nose, chinese upside down cat, a birchir/poly for the bottom. Then throw in some small fast moving ditchers, plants and wood. I think that would look cool.

The wood will break down faster then hard wood. Also heard that it leches a white fuzzy looking thing. The good news is that plecos will eat the white fuss that is just sugar coming out of the wood. So you can use it but it will geek down faster.
