    Protein skimmer

IMO I wouldn't touch it. A new skimmer usually takes a few days to break in and start producing good foam. Just let it be for now, when it breaks in it will happen in the blink of an eye and you'll know.

    Not thick enough..?

Hey everyone, I am working on a 40g breeder aquarium that I am going to turn into a DIY sump/refugium and I bought some acrylic the other day that is .080" thick and I was just wondering if that is going to be thick enough? I feel that it is but I would just like to be sure. Thanks!

    Calcium reactor? Pros/cons?

Thank you for the info. I've had freshwater experience in the past and saltwater is new for me, I plan on just getting a few mushrooms to start off with, I don't think I'll be getting any hard corals for a while so perhaps I will wait before I think about a calcium reactor.

    Calcium reactor? Pros/cons?

Would purchasing a calcium reactor for my 75g reef tank be a good idea? What exactly does a calcium reactor do? What are some of the pros and cons of owning one?

    Where to place heater?

I didn't know that they made heaters with that kind of technology, that's great to hear! So do you think it would be most beneficial to be placed in the same stage as the return pump in my sump?

    Where to place heater?

I should have been more clear on that lol I'm sorry. Do you guys have a fail safe for the sump if the power goes out so that the sump or main tank will not overflow?

    Where to place heater?

Yea I was thinking about that too actually. I know a heater that size for a 75g tank is going to be fairly long so I'm trying to picture it and I think that placing it upright would be the best way to go. My only other concern would be how do I set up the plumbing so that should the power go...

    Where to place heater?

I did not think of the overflow box... That would be a good place to put it! I'll have to do recheck the measurements to make sure that it will fit, thank you for the help.

    Where to place heater?

Ok so I have a 75g main tank and I am currently in the process of building a 40g refugium/sump and I've heard that some people place their heaters in the sump so that it's not in the display tank. I would like to do this too but I was wondering if there was a specific stage as to where it should...

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

Thanks for all of the help! :) lol but I know that you can put the heater in the sump which is what I would like to do. I have a 40g tank that I'm going to make a sump/refugium and I was wondering where is the best place to put the heater for a 75g tank? Does it matter which stage I put it in...

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

For the most part protein skimmers are usually located within the first chamber, but I see that some are located in the second and sometimes third chambers... Is their a benefit to doing this?

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

Does anyone know of a site or article that I could go to that will show and teach me how to install a sump pump and return lines and everything?

What sump pump do you use? Any recommendations?

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

I do believe the they make reef controllers that can sense a rise in water level and turn it off if something like that happens right? Also, since I am going to introduce corals into my tank eventually should I look at the benefit of installing a calcium reactor? What exactly does it do?

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

Yea I saw some tanks online that overflow boxes and attached to them were tubing and PVC running down into the sump. I'm also thinking about building my own aquarium stand as it is looking to be about impossible to find one that will house a 30 gallon sump with ease

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

Alright, I will definitely have to check that out thank you. What are some good corals to start out with for beginners? I plan on getting a pair of clowns so if their is a hardy anemone out their I'm all ears

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

I can only imagine lol so the refugium/sump is a definite buy for me, along with a protein skimmer. Which I will do more research on and find out which one would be the best for me to use. As far as return pumps go, how are they installed? I've skimming here and there and I've read that some...

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

You know what? You guys talked me into it. I figure that I will just suck it up and do the extra work and put in a sump/refugium, because I asked myself and I will not be able to resist not wanting corals eventually! Lol the thing is... Is that the idea of installing a sump and refugium...

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

As far as I'm concerned this 75g tank is never going to be a reef tank. At least not for a very log time anyways beings that it will be my first saltwater aquarium. The filter I'm looking at purchasing is rated for up to 400 gallons which should definitely do the job on top of the live rock. Te...

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

I did a lot of research and since I'm not really interested in getting a refugium I believe that I'm going to end buying the Fluval FX5 filter. Read and have seen a lot of good things about it and having that on top of my live rock and sand should keep my water crystal crystal crystal clear lol...

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

Well I would hate to do that, so I will look around and do some more research. As far as what type of filter I should go with what do you recommend other then lie rock and sand?

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

I'll keep that in mind Carey thank you! I'm looking to build my stock list around ocellaris clownfish. I figure I'll get a pair of them and maybe a pacific blue tang if I go with a 75g, any idea as to what my fish capacity limit would be? Also, what are some other fish suggestions that would be...

    Do I HAVE to have a sump/refugium?

I'll look into getting a sump, but it's the refugium that I am really not looking to get. I do plan on having quite a bit of live rock and using two HOB filters that are rated double of which ever sized gallon tank that I decide to buy, as well as adding a protein skimmer. Changing the filters...
