i have 4 for you.. what are they??

The first one is some kind of sponge. I have those on some of my rocks and they don't seem to be doing anything bad. Sponges are good filter feeders, there are some bad ones though. The second picture you have of the "stick thing" looks like a type of worm that is very common and beneficial to...

    T5 Lighting fixture.

Agreed. I would recommend a fan either way, with the 250 or the 400, but with the 400 definitely.

    Is this enough light?

True actinic (blue) bulbs dont really contribute to PAR, it just makes your corals fluoresce (if they have the ability to). The link doesnt work but i know the current fixture. It would basically be the same thing as the T5 nova since the nova comes with one relfector for all of the bulbs...

    Is this enough light?

With the fixture you are thinking about getting, you would be able to easily keep most types of coral in your tank. It isn't too much light, you may need to watch the water temperature a little bit but it should be great. I've seen someone use a 250 watt MH retro over a 3 gallon pico reef...

    T5 Lighting fixture.

No, if you use a 250 watt bulb, you need a 250 watt ballast if you use a 400 watt bulb, you need a 400 watt ballast. Fortunately there isn't that much of a price difference between 250 and 400.

    T5 Lighting fixture.

Here is the matching Icecap 250 watt ballast- $130 IceCap 250W Metal Halide Electronic Ballast - AquaCave Then you would need to buy a bulb (anywhere from $50-80). I looked right next to the ballast and found this Icecap retro kit- 250 watt, when you pick your options for bulbs, the coralvues...

    T5 Lighting fixture.

I just looked at that link JOM20 like thincat says, It is just the pendant, you'd have to buy a ballast and a bulb, but that setup would be very good IMO.

    T5 Lighting fixture.

Check out this page, you'll have to scroll down, there's a 400 watt retro that would be good- Reef Exotics or check out- hellolights.com reefgeek.com I have ordered from both of those online vendors and I like them both. Or look through the classifieds on this forum and others to find a...

taking my first steps in salt water

I don't really understand what you are asking. Are you mixing the saltwater in your tank? (adding salt to freshwater) with the live sand in there?

    T5 Lighting fixture.

T5's work best on shallower tanks (less than 20-24 inches deep) and the deeper it gets, the less light penetrates to the bottom. If you did get a T5 HO SLR fixture or retro (I believe Melosu is refering to) then on a tank like yours (which is about 30'' deep) you would basically have to keep...

    T5 Lighting fixture.

No, I'm sorry but something like that would be good for a FOWLR, where light isn't really required..... I don't know what your budget is but if you are going to do reef on a 65 hex, you could do a 250 watt Metal halide...but if it was me I would go with a 400 watt MH.

FS Refugium, R/O, Powerhead, Kent Product, etc (NYC)

What do you have left? I'm interested in the refugium and light also, if it hasnt been sold already.

    Enough lighting for anemones?

Along with getting better lighting (T5's or MH or both), I would recommend getting a bigger tank. A 12.5 is too small for ANY of the clown hosting anemones. You could keep rock anemones (E. crucifer) but your tank is, in general, too small. If you did get a small one, you could keep it in the...

    Good deal?

IMO find out the brand of the MH lights and their condition. If the tank is still setup, ask if you can see it in action with everything working then decide. Like said before, lighting is the most expensive (other then the livestock lol) part of reefkeeping.

    new 10gal planted- substrate ?

I'm going with the eco complete instead of flourite. I've never used either before.

    new 10gal planted- substrate ?

Great. Thanks guys. I will be picking up a bag of EcoComplete and setting up the tank this weekend.

    new 10gal planted- substrate ?

I am going to be setting up a 10 gallon in my apt in about week and I'm trying to decide what substrate to use. I love Anubias sp. and I'm going to be taking a couple of cuttings from my 54 gallon and put them into the new 10. I have Anubias nana and I believe barteri. I will probably also pick...

    Contructing T5 Fixtures

Depending on bulb combination and reflectors T-5's can produce much more PAR then MH on tanks < 24'' deep. Tek reflectors (48'' reflectors are 3'' wide) are slightly wider then IceCaps so they give a better spread of light when using 2-4 bulbs but when you need to put 6-8 bulbs in IceCaps are...

Purchasing LR w/ Coraline algae to cycle a tank?

Make sure you ask them if they have ever dosed the tank w/ medications, especially copper based ones. If so then I would not. Also just look for any unwanted hitchikers/algae. Other then that it would be good.

    Contructing T5 Fixtures

You would probably be best looking online at like Hellolights.com and ReefGeek.com for T-5 retros. When reefers are talking about T-5's, unless stated otherwise, they are talking about T-5 HO. The ones that are sold at hardware stores are pretty much always NO, unless they sell lights for...

    maxijet or koralia or other?

The koralia's also create a vortex if too close to the top. I only have 2 koralia nanos in my ten gallon so I can't say for the larger versions, but I really like them and will probably get these for my next venture- frag tanks. I really like the dispersed flow they put out and my corals love...
