Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus) by Fruitbat

Bro n5xmt, If what you mean by south american dragon fish is the silver arowana, then I hope you have considered that the fish can grow up to 3 feet and grows quite fast. Therefore it would take a big tank for it. One more thing, your bichirs might be arowana food later.

That's what I thought too. When younger, my bichir can catch feeder fish, prawns, etc with quick ACCURATE jabs. Now it's like blindly jabbing anywhere near the food but usually misses. I suspect my bichir may be blind. What happened? What could have made it become blind?

I have a question. Can a bichir see? or it relies mostly on it's barbels to locate food. My bichir used to head towards food quite quickly and snaps at it and can even catch small fishes and prawns, but lately I notice that it swims around aimlessly. seems like it can sense food when dropped...

Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus) by Fruitbat

Bichir a bit injured Hi Fruitbat, I have a problem. One of my bichirs has a small (about 1cm) cut on its side. It reddish but I think the bleeding has stopped. What do I do? Will it turn bad or infected or heal by itself? Do I have to put Melafix? If yes, how will Melafix affect the other...

Question about baby polypterus senegalus I just noticed the new pictures of the baby polypterus. How big are they? I've seen some lfs selling very small polyteruses (less than 2 inches) but they don't have those stripes like in you picture. How come? They look like an adult only much smaller...

Mr Fruitbat. My female bichir has been regularly (about twice a month) laying eggs ( or something that looks like eggs anyway) but they all are still unfertilised. Hmmm.... I've had my bichirs less than a year. Had them when they're about 3". The female's about 8" and the male about 7" now...

Good to hear that your polypterus is getting better. Anyway you can tell if it is male or female by refering to my previous pictures. Males have broad anal fins. I learnt this from Fruitbat. Anyway, is it normal for polypteruses to fight anomg each other? I thought they are friendly. The tank...

A patch of my polypterus tail had been bitten off by a turtle before. Also the pectoral fins had also been torn before. But now I have removed the turtle and the tail and fins have grown back very nicely. I have been lucky that my two polypteruses do not fight since I first got them.

My bichir laid some more eggs yesterday but looked like the previous batch. white and opaque. So I presume they won't hatch.

Sob! Sob! I think you are right. Now that you have mention it, they looked like they are fungused and I sure don't see anything amber-coloured or moving in them. I'll keep them another few days just to observe, but I won't put much hope. It was kinda exciting. Thanks anyway.

Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus) by Fruitbat

I have just posted a pic of the eggs in my gallery but still pending approval. There is only a baby jardini arowana and the two polypterus in the tank. They get along well for now since the arowana is still smaller than the bichirs. Anyway the arowana hangs around the top while the bichirs hang...

Hi Fruitbat and gang, I think my bichirs have just laid some eggs. Yesterday morning I saw the male chasing the female incessantly (usually they don't bother each other). When I came home today, I saw the tank was littered with around 20 tiny white and round balls (which I presume is the egg...

Hmmm. I've thought of breeding them but not sure I'll be able to pull it off, considering I'm just a beginner. I've also read somewhere that breeding bichirs is very difficult. Thanks for recommending the book. However I'm not too sure I'll be able to find it here in Malaysia, and buying from...

Thanks for the replies. I not sure of the sex of my two fish. Anyway I am attaching pictures of them. The first pic is of the bigger and fatter one. The second is the smaller and thinner one while the third is of them together. From you explanation, i reckoned that the fatter one is female...
