    Ammonia and cyano issues

I started out last week battling cyano. I cut down on the lighting and added flow. I left for two days and now the cyano is worse. I now have 1ppm ammonia, evidently something died over the weekend... I got new zoos last week and some of them are turning clear at the base is this the problem...

Stop me before I kill somethin'

As far as I've tried, (and the reason I have small tanks) moving can be done. That far will be really tough. I'd wait. (Where in Virginia are you moving to? I'm from Blacksburg area) From my understanding and I hope people will correct me if I'm wrong. A glass tank should be able to...

Stop me before I kill somethin'

I wouldn't recommend it, but my first tank was a 5 gallon. I've been a nano-reefer ever since. The difference is the chemistry. If you have a background in chemistry and the persistance to keep it in check I think you could do it. If you have the funds and want two clowns, go with the 20 or...

    Sand in pumps/filters

It seems to be sand grains in the mechanism, I can take it apart to clean it but it seems to have to be cleaned everyday.

    Sand in pumps/filters

I'm having trouble with sand getting in my pumps and especially my filter and causing the motor to stop, I'm afraid this is going to burn out the motor. I tried using a coarse sponge in the intake, but it seemed to be putting too much stress on the pump. Any ideas? Thanks.

What is your favorite saltwater fish?

Queen Angels (I hope to have the tank to own one happily someday) Baracudas (for their curiousity and grace)

    Saltwater Aquarium in Apt?

Also, how long are you living in this place? I keep only small easy tanks so that I can move them when I need to. If you are only going to be there a year or two and moving a distance you'll want to go with something smaller that you have a chance of being able to move.

    Gloves...

Just a quick reminder, since most of you probably do this. If you want your gloves to last, rinse them off. Salt accumlating on the outside will dry out the material. Also if you live in a arid enviroment store them close to the tank where it'll be a little more humid. Over time the seams...

    Buying livestock online

Whenever I have ordered a fish through my LPS, I can get them to call me as soon as it comes in. Since our stores get fish on monday's I know when to expect the call and I can go pick it up immediately, before they acclimate it. This keeps you from bringing home anything from the LPS's tanks...

    Feeding when on vacation

I don't recommend it but I have left my five gallon and my ten gallon for a week and a half without an auto top off system and both were fine. Water levels were low and my fish were hungry but a water change and some food later everyone was happy. My chemistry wasn't too bad. (My friend was...

    Glue for rock

Yeah, I've never glued anything. But I only have small tanks now, so there is no need to. Actually, I work with a bunch of chemists (I'm a geochemist). We need some fun little projects every now and then in addition to the usual daily load. I didn't know what was out there in terms of...

    Glue for rock

Hey, This is a little bit random, but I was doing a search online and didn't come up with much. What type of glues do you use to attach rock to rock? Are they clear? Do they cure underwater or with significant moisture? Thanks! (I hope this is ok in this forum)

    Clown Question..something weird.

Veggies I had a scopias tang that loved cucumber slices, though I'd have to watch closely and take out the uneaten portions. The damsels would nip at it too but never seemed as interested. Hopefully someone else will tell you if this is a bad idea, I'm not so confident in my advice.

    Lighting for a small tank

Thanks! I think I'm going to go with a few polyps and an ocellaris and see what happens. I'm particularly fond of a cleaner shrimp I have, do you think that would be too much for the 5? I've been hesitant to try it. I keep extremely close tabs on the chemistry of the tanks, but I don't want...

    Lighting for a small tank

I've been keeping 10 and 5 gallon fish only salt water aquariums for about 3 years. Though I am very limited in what I can keep, I really enjoy the small tanks. (I move around so larger tanks aren't an option for me). I was thinking of adding some polyps or maybe an anemone to my tank with a...

    Lighting for a small tank

I'm setting up a 5 gallon salt water tank. Is there such thing as too much light? I want to put a small power compact on it, would that be appropriate? Thanks!
