    Painted back

I don't think the sheen on the paint matters too much, nor the brand. Flat, Satin or Gloss are all gonna look the same on glass pretty much. The amount you'll need also varies by the size tank and how thick the layers are applied. 175 gallon will need a couple of large tubes, maybe more IMHO...

    Quiet filters? NEED SLEEP!

There's really no way to change that part of a HOB's noisiness. They're gonna make the watery sound. Unless you put the return from a canister well under the water level you're going to have the same splashing sound on it too. I personally consider it "white noise" and just ignore it. If it's in...

    Quiet filters? NEED SLEEP!

Sometimes they clack if the impeller and housing needs to be cleaned. Stuff can get down around the impeller shaft and it causes it to bang against the sides of its housing and make noise. If this has been going on awhile you may need a new impeller because the shaft can be damaged from the...

    Painted back

Be advised, looking out from the inside of the tank and no lighting on the interior, the back will not seem opaque with 3 coats. Once you get the thing filled and light shooting down from overhead you won't even notice what was glaringly obvious before when viewed from the inside. It's probably...

    Painted back

I painted the back of my tanks with regular old acrylic craft paint. Roll it on and it actually doesn't have to be all that thick. I think I did 3 coats and went up and down 1 coat, hit it with the hair dryer a few minutes and then back and forth second coat and back to up and down for the final...

    Looking at Sacramento Valley relocation

My insignificant other and I have been talking over the possibility of moving to NoCal sometime in the near future. Somewhere in the northern part of the central valley would suit me fine. We're thinking somewhere within a 1/2 hour drive of a major metro area medical center since I work in the...

    75 gallon Malawi build

Changes Plans have changed. The dearly beloved had an unexpected windfall so we went tank shopping, as one does when you have extra cash on hand. Now there is a glass 125 gallon being delivered sometime soon that will be the African setup. The 75 gallon is being converted into a Central...

    iPhone HDR images

Ah...thanks for pointing that out. The whole "HD" part is kinda misleading, isn't it? I keep the setting on to keep both images and then pick the one I want to use once I've adjusted the images. Up until now that is usually the HDR image but it's not ALWAYS the case. Sometimes I think the...

    iPhone HDR images

Here's a couple of images of Cherry Barbs taken with the iPhone using the "patience method". I have found that as I use the phone more often, the fish are getting used to it and are less uneasy about the phone moving around against the glass as I try to line up shots. It's still hard to get a...

    75 gallon Malawi build

Will do! Supposedly our water is SO hard here in the Phoenix metropolitan area that it takes huge doses of acids to change the pH by much. As far as I know, the small one on the right is the only piece of driftwood I will have in there. The floating piece is already out. I have a master kit and...

    75 gallon Malawi build

I'm setting up a 48"x18"x21" glass tank for Africans. Marineland Magnum 350 and Emperor 400 filters. Eggcrate from hardware store under the Tahitian Moon sand to protect the bottom from diggers and rock slides. Water temperature is steady at 80F (27C). It started off with nothing but actinic...

    iPhone HDR images

Hmmmmm.... Ok. Here's exactly what I did: Open the Camera app and select "Options". Set the HDR to ON and select "Done". Turn off the flash. Place the phone right against the side of the aquarium and use the aquarium's side to steady the phone as you hold it with one hand. Move the phone...

    iPhone HDR images

Here's some images I've taken of my 75 gallon planted community setup and a Jack Dempsey using the camera app on the iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1 with the "HDR" turned on. All editing was done on the iPhone itself using only the camera app. No other programs/apps were used. I'm kind of...

Okay, I've scoured Google images for both rhino and leopard (duh! Leopold...leopard! That's where Mom got the freaking name! I'm such a dunce!) plecos and it is definitely NOT a rhino. Different looking head, different coloration and markings, the star around the eye, etc.. Maybe the stripes in...

Ok...I've checked rhinos and it doesn't look like that. He has a star shape around its eyes that I've seen on images of leopard Plecos but the rhinos don't have them. I've had it around 3 years or so. It was 2-3 inches when I got him and he's 8ish now.

It's a "sailfin" is all I know. I want to say it was labeled as a "leopard Pleco" when I got it.
