    Starfish & water changes

Finally got my first starfish now my tank has had time to stabilise.... Got a Maldive Star (Marble Sea Star) & it seems to have settled in ok, but its hooked itself on the glass about 1cm down from the water level, which atm is ok, but when I go to do a water change sunday its gonna expose it...

    Not understanding cycle process

Nope, you leave it alone whilst its on going as the good bacteria etc has to build up, just top up with fresh RO for evap if you get it, you don't evenneed the lights on whilst cycling.... Cheers Shelton.

    Not understanding cycle process

My tank cycled quickly (10days) but i did add 20kgs of cured lr all in one go & a couple of fresh dead prawns, I still saw ammonia for 2 or 3 days, then nitrite & finally nitrate..... I would follow the above "fishless" cycle & see what happens testing once a day from about day 2 or 3 Don't...

    proper acclimation

All hermits tend to favor nassarius/cerith & io snail shells sadly, even though I've given my hermits plenty of spare shells :( Red legs tend to be a bit lazy, you might wanna try some zebra legs & some turbo snails for the glass. As a guide they say "roughly" 1 snail per gallon of water, but...

    RO/DI problem

Hmmmmmm, might be worth biting the bullet before you do anything else & buy a Salifert kit if you can? The salifert kit (i have) gives an instant reading rather than waiting a set amount of time. Atleast you'll prove the testkit and/or make of testkit is the problem or not? Cheers Shelton.

    RO/DI problem

What are you using to check for PO4? have you tried borrowing a different test kit/get your LFS to check it for you? Just incase thats not right? Cheers Shelton.

    Running carbon

In my Ehiem I have a large particle filter pad in the bottom basket, 2 layers of filter then rowaphos & 2 layers of filter in the middle basket & then 2 layers of wool then Carbon then 2 more layers of filter in the top basket Doesn't /seem/ to slow mine down, I supposed if it became cloaked...

    Running carbon

Hehehehe, as I said you can run it for as long or as little as you like, ask 50 different users on here the wsame & I bet you'd get atleast 10 differenent times/amounts, try it at a week, see what difference it makes to your water & then you can always adjust it up or down from there :) Cheers...

    Running carbon

If you buy a quality carbon you shouldn't have problems leaving it in for a month, in the end its how much you want to spend & how much time you want to spend changing it? Cheers Shelton.

    changing water without changing temperature

Should have read your post properly! soz.... Cheers Shelton.

    Running carbon

Hmmmmmmm, I use it as I was told it "polishes" the water, basically trapping small particles etc, you have to watch it though as it can be a nitrate factory if left too long, but i check all param's once a week & my nitrates never go above 2 :) Cheers Shelton.

    Running carbon

I run both my carbon & wool for 3 weeks at a time..... Cheers Shelton.

    Saltwater newbie needs some direction...

Tbh I think 10gal is too small for a newbie, even someone that has kept freshwater before, I have a 30gal (42 US) that is quite "challenging" to keep stable, smaller than 30gal are considered Nano's & more expert level. Cheers Shelton.

    Keeping up alkalinity.

Your alk shouldn't fall that quickly, how often do you water change? What is your alk now? Also it would be handy to know your PH level (& what time of day you took the reading) & also your calcium level as they are all interlinked The best way to tell is to test the alk a couple of hours after...

    Tropic Marin Pro Reef Salt

I can't see why you can't go 10% per week for a month & then go back to your 20% bi-weekly..... Cheers Shelton

    Tropic Marin Pro Reef Salt

Large swings are more of a concern, if your tank is say 8.4 at its highest just before lights out & drops overnight to say 8.1 thats fine, if it drops more then that would be a problem, the same as a 8.0-7.7 would be ok. I have changed salt brands 3 tim,es now, always done 10% water changes per...

    Tropic Marin Pro Reef Salt
