Well the filter will help, but you will still have to check your levels often and do quite a few water changes to keep everything in line.

Most plants aren't that crazy about salt. Some fish don't do well with it either. Probably better not to use it unless you are using it to medicate. Also, most of your beneficial bacteria will not be in your water column, so transferring water to a new tank is pretty much a waste.

The oceanvisions (and I imagine similar products) doesn't have to be bent. It is flexible naturally. Sort of like a heavy-duty contact paper.

Yes that is normal. I think you sent your tank into a mini-cycle. Don't replace the filter unless you absolutely need to (ie to get rid of medication, the filter is falling apart). Rinse it in used tank water instead. I hardly ever have to change my filter in my hob.

Another suggestion for when/if you buy a new heater... If you enjoy being able to adjust the temp without getting elbow deep in tank water, you can get a titanium heater with the adjustment that hangs outside the tank. I love mine!
