White vinegar is the way to go. Use it straight from the bottle, let it soak for a bit and srub off. I have done some with a new scotch brite pad, the real stubborn stuff may need to be scrapped off with a razor blade. Just use some caution so you don't scratch up the tank.

The repair is not going to be under the tank. I'll be installing the plastic stock to the underside of the orginal crossbar. The underside of the original crossbar is channeled so the stock will fit perfectly and will be stronger than the thin plastic of the original crossbar.

Since the crossbar is open on the underside I plan on using some 3/8" square plastic stock and running a piece across the entire length and epoxying it in place. It should be stronger then the original crossbar. After the repair is done and completely dry I plan on setting it up on the stand...

In theory the lava from your LFS should be fine. It wouldn't hurt it to scrub and bake in the sun you never know who has handled it and what they may have had on thier hands. I always like err on the side of caution. As for boiling or baking lava rock in the oven or something like that DO NOT...

Corys are definitely not picky eaters. I feed mine flakes, wafers and blood worms, that is when my mollies let them actually get to the bottom. You may want to pick up a few more corys, they are happiest when in groups of at least 4.

What type of test kit are you using? If it's one of the stick types, I would recommend ditching those and picking up an API Master Freshwater Kit. The sticks can be fairly inaccurate.

If you haven't built the canopy yet, you may want to seal it before you do final assembly. Any spot where water can get in it will. Then give a couple of coats after it's put together.
