    I put a puffer in a community tank ...

A 10g will do for a juvie GSP <2", but eventyually it'll need at least 30g for a 6" adult. I think mine would have been happy in a 55g by himself.

    Cycling question

Sounds ok then. Generally I upgrade my tanks by just moving my filters over to the larger tank, along w/decor. I usually change the substrate, or bring that over too.

    Cycling question

If you aren't using anything to feed tha bacteria in your tank, then it is just dying off. You must feed the bacteria w/an ammonia source.

Water changes, water changes, water changes! 50% weekly is what I have done for over 26 years.

    I put a puffer in a community tank ...

Why do you keep salt in your FW set-up? Waste of salt. Make sure to read that link about your puffer posted above. You must use marine salt & measure with a hydrometer.

    nitrites

I don't believe those kits are very reliable. Get Aquarium Pharmecuticals.

Not very accurate test. Better to use Aquarium Pharmecuticals.

Well, all those WC sure didn't hurt! Glad to hear that is straightened out. Is it 0 on your test kit? Cause at 5, my fish were struggling to stay alive!

    Hydrometer problems.

    I paid <$40 from Ebay.

I also use a refractometer. I'd definately calibrate any hydrometer (especially the floating kind) against one, to find out how much they are off. I believe the floating ones are calibrated for temps in the 60s.

Like an oscar & goldfish pooping in your tank!

    Dwarf Puffer... Compatable With These?

The puffer will more than likely kill much larger fish than what you even have. They have known to go on fin-rides of silver dollars 20x their size! I highly suggest not putting any puffer of any kind in w/your fish. Dwarf puffers are in no way, mild-mannered puffers.

    nitrites

Sounds like something could be rotting in your tank. More than likely though, the kit is wrong, cause at 10 nitrItes, your fish would all be dead. Sure that isn't nitrAtes?

There is no bacteria in the water column. It only lives on surfaces. I do 50% weekly water changes... have been for 26 years.

    Hydrometer problems.

Make sure to tap it a little after filling it to remove any bubbles that may raise up the arm, giving you a higher SG reading.
