Didnt know cleaner shrimp could be physically sick??

Hope someone can help, I've had my fire shrimp, cleaner shrimp, and hermit crab in the same tank for weeks now. All was going well. I do water changes weekly cuz it's a small tank, and I keep an eye on all the necessary levels. Nothing has gone wrong or been changed since I got them, including...

    Taking the plunge!

Been a while, I know! Still only have my cleaner shrimp, fire shrimp, and hermit crab. Everything was and is fine, all levels and temp and such. However, today I have noticed my cleaner shrimp shaking sharply sometimes, and literally being sick. I have no idea what could be wrong, I haven't...

Yeh I meant that the other way around lol had a load of nitrate, no ammonia or nitrite. It's all good. Got a fire shrimp, a cleaner shrimp, and a hermit crab now, and they're doing well :)

So, weeks later, and the water has cycled! No ammonia, no nitrate, just a lot of nitrite, which I have decreased through water changes. Hoping to add my first cleanup crew later today. Will post updates on how it's going every few weeks.

Sounds great! Glad it went well for you :) I won't have any live plants in mine as its a little on the small side, but thanks for the post!

Not posted in a while, simply because I'm still cycling my tank. Carried out a water change today to lower the nitrate level. Ammonia is at 1ppm, hopefully on the decline but can't be sure. Salinity is roughly 1.026, and temp is at 26c (79f). Will post again once cycled or if anything changes.

Thanks for the advice, but I dont think I need to get a power head. My tank is small, and the central aeration is suppose to give optimum flow, which it seems to as when it was cloudy at one point you can really see the flow pattern.

Used some aquarium start today in order to get the cycle started/going. Was also given the option of purchasing a cheap hardy fish, such as a black Molly, and placing it in the tank to get the cycle going. However I chose not to because I would only end up taking it back when the cycle had...

    Specific gravity testing

My floating hydrometer is awkward to read. The swing arm is fine if rinsed with freshwater and no bubbles are in it. Considering my tank is rather small, doesn't contain live corals, and will only have a few inhabitants, it will do just fine. I am however planning on purchasing a refractometer...

    Undissovled salt

Oh ok, thanks doug. Yeh I read that for starting a fishless cycle I can mix the salt water in the tank itself. Won't be doing that ever again lol Like I said all the undissolved salt is out now, and I always premix. Thanks.

Thanks, I'm going to set mine to roughly 25c (77f) and go with that :) Cheers!

    Specific gravity testing

Gone for the needle hydrometer over the refractometer. Simply because of a huge difference in price! The needle is more accurate than the floating one so all good :) thanks guys!

    Undissovled salt

I have removed the remaining undissolved salt from the bottom of the tank and topped up to the correct water level. Specific gravity is at 1.023 so all good :) thanks for your help guys!

Put the rock in today :) Adjusted the water level and checked the specific gravity using a needle hydrometer. I went for the needle instead of a refractometer simply because of a huge difference in cost. The needle is close enough. Specific gravity is at 1.023 so all good. The cycle needs a...

    Undissovled salt

Yes salt creep does get onto the top of the tank, but I can deal with that. I'm just giving it a go, if it doesn't work out then it doesn't work out. Won't be adding any creatures until its perfect so no harm in trying at the mo! Thanks.

Ok that's a good tip, thanks :) Getting some tomorrow.. I'm not fussed about how long the cycle takes, as long as its perfect before I put any creatures in! Thanks again!

I am letting it settle, not touched it since last post. I will be adding live rock, but was told semi cured might be better? Oh right lol ok well unfortunately I can't afford any rock until Thursday so it will have to wait.. Not sure on the correct salinity as hydrometers can be misleading, so...

Will it have the same effect in a biorb though?

    Undissovled salt

I added it slowly, and I had my pump running, and I stirred, but mine is a central pump and I have no power heads, so I'm going to need another way to get it to dissolve or remove it somehow..
