    YoYo Loach Not Growing!

I have had the exact same thing happen with my clown loaches. All do well but one real small runty guy who has barely grown over the year that I have had him. The others are now easily 3 times the size of the small one when they all started the same size. He looks like another species.

So how do you keep shrimp with any of these suspected Seafood lovers ? Just buy 'em big?

    Hey! Who ate my shrimp?

I have a 140 gallon planted tank and recently bought 18 Amano and 4 Cherry shrimp to help with algae control. Some of the shrimp were pretty small but others were good sized. Over the course of 2 weeks, they have all but disappeared. I saw one large Amano yesterday but can't find any others...

    black algae getting me down

Black (and to a lesser extent green) algae have been problematic since I started my tank a year and a half ago. I have a 140 gal tank with 384 watts of light on for 10 hours a day. There is no direct light on it. I have 5 ottos, 4 algae eaters, 1 SAE, 2 plecos, and a bunch of other non-algae...

    Brown filamentous algae

Because of a green algae bloom, I got a bunch of otos and a pleco for my fairly new 140 gal planted tank. With a combination of turning down my lights and these fish, the green algae is all but gone. My phosphate level is fairly low (0.15) Unfortunately, the brown algae has gotten much worse...

    Algae problems in 140g tank

Thanks- I will check into the CO2 possibilities at my LFS. Its not that I'm intimidated by it, its just another variable (and expense) that I was hoping to avoid while I'm still getting the tank set up. Which plants would you recommend for low light? What other creatures (fish, snails, or...

    Algae problems in 140g tank

Thanks for the tips. My Eco-complete substrate says that I shouldn't need to fertilize. I have occassionally added fertilizer anyway (10 drops of Plant 24 by Dupla, every 2-3rd day). My nitrate levels are fairly consistent in the 10 range and the ammonia and nitrite are 0. The pH is 8.0 and...

    Algae problems in 140g tank

Rex- As your article and my local fish store guy suggested I put 4 X 96 watt bulbs over my new 140 gallon tank (2.6 watts/gallon) and put in some rocks and plants. The algae growth was unbelievable and actually covered all my plants and rocks and killed all of the hygrophilia. I have since...

    Green algae disaster

Thanks for your help. The ammonia had to have come from bacteria in the Eco-complete substrate or from rotting plants -since I had a lot of them. Since then, I have removed the dead plants and 5 days ago added some fish including - 3 otos, 1 rubber lipped plecostomus, and 5 shrimp. My...

    Green algae disaster

I have a 48 inch PC with 4X 96 watt bulbs. Since the algae started I am only running half the bulbs at a time for 8 hours. I have never added ammonia to the system. There were some plants starting to rot which I have now removed. Could they have been a source of ammonia? What is an "Oto"...

    Green algae disaster

I don't know where the ammonia is coming from unless it is from the Eco-complete substrate which apparently has bacteria in it. Should I be doing water changes to try to save the plants? Should I just buy some of those bacteria to instantly cycle the tank?

    Green algae disaster

I have a new 140 gal tank and have added Eco-complete substrate, several large shist rocks, a sword plant, 2 anubis plants (1 large and 1 small), some hydrophilia, and some java ferns. I have power compact flourescent lights which are now cycling at 8 hours of day at low settings (previously...

    Getting the right rocks

I retested the shist rock for a week in a bucket of tap water and once again the pH rose 0.2, however a control bucket of just tap water did the same thing so something fishy (if you'll pardon the pun) is going on here. Maybe the plastic trash cans I'm using affect the pH. I also did a test...

    Getting the right rocks

I am setting up a new freshwater aquarium and was told it was ok to put some Shist rock in it. It is a beautiful blue rock that passes the vinegar test. I put it in a bucket for a week and noted a pH rise from about 7.4 to 7.6. Would it be ok to use this rock for my tank? The fish (at least...
