shellies, do they only use shells?

I am getting a group of N. Brevis and want to know if they only use shells or can I get away with PVC or flower pots. I have the tank set up with coral sand and am acquiring shells now, not the easiest item to find these days.

I did order the aquastyle led kit. 50/50 white/blue with the 2 red led lamps. Should be here soon. Looking forward to getting it together. From what I have seen on forums, the light is so intense, that you have to use the dimmers.
