    72 bowfront background.

We had a catastrophic tank failure about a week ago and had to find a tank in a hurry. We found an old church selling what we were told was an "old, large tank in rough shape" for $40. It turned out to be a really solid 72 gal bowfront in great shape, it was just very dirty. (Hard water marks...

Are you able to identify this rock?

I can't be sure, but it looks like chert to me. In which case it should be fine. Put some vinegar on it. If nothing happens then you should be fine. If it fizzes, leave it out. :)

    Adding an Angelfish?

Mine were in a heavily planted 40 gal breeder, so just keep an eye out for problems. The first angel died over night the first night. He didn't have any obvious injuries and I didn't think anything of it. Juvie angels aren't the hardiest of fish. The next morning I came out the the DG had the...

    Adding an Angelfish?

I have a 46 bowfront and I love it! My dwarf gourami killed one of my angels and seriously injured the other. I've never seen any other signs of aggression from him, and he seemed fine when the angels were introduced. When I turned off the light on the tank though all bets were off. I know...

    Disaster Averted

I can't believe they survived either! This oscar has been through so much. His first tank was open topped and he jumped out twice, once I caught the cat licking him. He got moved to a bigger tank with a lid and a jack dempsey. The JD beat the tar out him, to the point where we were sure he was...

    Disaster Averted

Chaos reigns in our house. So we did a big water change on our 55 grow out tank earlier this evening, sometime around 7ish and have been sitting in the next room for the rest of the night. I went to go to bed and decided to turn on the moonlights to see if I could catch a glimpse of our new...

    PetSmart

Our local petsmart is terrible. The last time I was in there the girl bagged my fish and reminded me not to change my water more than once a month or my fish would get ick. *facepalm*

    40 Gallon Oscar

It probably CAN be done, but whether it's a good idea or not is another issue. I have three oscars, and my big boy Bruno has been living alone in a non-standard 55 (width is 18in rather than 12) and even at barely 10 inches he's starting to look like a big fish in a little tank. For his sake and...

    Magic Pleco?

HA! I can't tell you how crazy it made me when I couldn't find him. I took that whole thing apart too when I moved it. He must have wedged himself in there somewhere because there's no other way he could have gotten to the new tank. (Unless he can fly) I keep checking to make sure he's really in...

    Help ID This Oscar

Looks like a tiger oscar to me, they have such interesting patters when they're little. He's a beauty. Oscars are terribly addictive. We have 3 right now, and if I could find space for another monster tank we'd probably end up with even more. :)

    Magic Pleco?

So a couple of months ago I bought an albino bristle nose pleco. He was little, maybe 1.5 inches, and put him in my 40 to grow him out. He was happy, always munching away on the driftwood, and then a couple of weeks later he just vanished without a trace. We broke the tank down, inspected all...

    Bad Fish Advice

That fish grow according to the size of the tank and that all of the fish you see in the store are suitable for a home aquarium. The guy at petsmart tried to sell me a paroon shark to keep my 5 gallon betta tank clean. He told me if I kept it in a small tank it would stay 2" forever. Ridiculous.

    Finally switched over to sand!

Autumnsky - That rock piece sounds amazing. Please post pictures of it! Moss really has almost no requirements. It will grow even in almost no lighting, with no extra CO2 and no ferts. Its ridiculous! Blue lights are generally for corals or saltwater tanks as far as I know (someone please...

    Closty is sick!

Generally as ammonia levels rise the pH will drop. Fix your ammonia levels (water changes and prime for short-term relief) and then retest the pH of the tank. Ammonia is more toxic at higher pH levels so don't try to mess with the pH until the Ammonia is gone. I can't help with the cloudy eye...

    lighting for moss

Weeping moss is a slow grower but very, very hardy. Almost anything you plant is going to need trimming now and again, weeping moss included, but you won't have to trim it very often.

    lighting for moss

I think, besides java, weeping moss has been the easiest to grow. It will grow under almost any conditions even in very very low light and warmer temperatures. Plus it's beautiful and droops down instead of growing up towards the light.

    Red swordtail female?!?!

The more females you have the less stressed/harassed they will be and the more likely they are to produce live fry. I would add more females. I had one male and one female for a long time with no fry. I added three females and they are all currently gravid, so it worked for me.

    lighting for moss

In my experience, most moss isn't very picky and will grow even in very low light. My java moss is growing like crazy in my fluvial chi with only the very dim LED light that came with it. I have mosses in all my tanks, several different kinds (java, x-mas, and weeping moss) and under various...

    Finally switched over to sand!

Thanks for the kind words everyone! Autumnsky: I started for the opposite reason, lol. I'm terrible at gardening. Everything terrestrial plant I touch dies, usually from under or over watering. I never can seem to strike a good balance. I tried bamboo since it grows immersed, but my cats...

    Finally switched over to sand!

Thank you! I just love the sand, and it's so much easier to plant in too! Planting is so much fun. Some of the plants are tied onto the rocks or driftwood, the others are planted in the sand directly.

    Finally switched over to sand!

Well, I finally switched two of my tanks over to sand and I'm loving it! I may just have to swap the rest of them over now... Here's the before and after shots:
