    29 gallon low light build

A couple of random questions if someone could please help me out. What's the best way to grow out the plants before adding fish? I'm asking because they're crypts and I didn't know if all the water changes at the end of a fishless cycle would cause melt. Are there any stem plants that could...

    29 gallon low light build

The three unsprouted bulbs are in a moist papertowel until they sprout. Bad picture time. The close ups I took are hard to see so I'll try again later. Basically I just guessed at what was what. The open area will have the bulbs in it. Planting=tough. Front view Side view to see the...

    29 gallon low light build

First group of plants arrived! :D Only they aren't marked. :( Four free apon bulbs though! :D No idea what kind. :( I need to try and figure out which bag is the wendtii brown, which is the wendtii green, and which is the undulata so I know where to plant them. Crypts look really similar...

    29 gallon low light build

My first planted tank and I'm excited, so excited that I'm putting up the build thread a day early. With any luck my plants will be here tomorrow (more on those in a bit) since I ordered them Sunday night. This is a 29 gallon with a 20W T8 bulb and no CO2. My hardscape has been changed from...

    This hardscape or that?

If I get lucky I might find the chili rasboras at this petstore that is an hour away from me. More than likely though I'll just end up ordering everything on line. Those loaches only get to 1.4" so I definitely think they'll fit in great with the other small fish. I'm starting off...

    This hardscape or that?

Then I have hope of good growth. I just need to be patient lol. I might eventaully get CO2, especially if it'll improve growth and open up more plants. Probably be a waste with my current lighting though.

    This hardscape or that?

Niki- It's a 29 gallon, so I'll have plenty of room for fish. Do you use CO2 as well? maestromad- I had only been thinking of 11 each, but maybe I'll up that amount for a bigger school. Hopefully the plants will arrive tomorrow. I'll start a new thread then. I picked only Southeast Asian...

    This hardscape or that?

What size tank do you have? I'm only running a single 20w bulb, but I was told that would be perfectly fine for all the plants I have ordered at least. Might need to experiment if I decide on others. My plan right now is to have the wendtii brown in the back at the center or offcenter. I guess...

    This hardscape or that?

At the moment that's it for a hardscape, unless I decide to go on a rock hunt. Not sure if that would add to it or not. I have a test run of plants ordered to see if I can keep them alive. Water sprite (1 floating) , Crypt wendtii brown and green (3 each), Crypt lucens (3), Crypt undulata(4)...

    This hardscape or that?

I played around some more and finally found something I liked. I just couldn't find a way to make it arched so that it looked natural, at least to me. I did try though. This is basically the second picture, just further to the right and with the two pieces closer together. It looks...

    This hardscape or that?

I do like them both pointing up. Might need to rethink my plan though, in regards to plants since I was going to do a concave design. Moving them farther apart might create that even focal point. Dumb question, but is moss the only driftwood plant that can grow vertically?

    This hardscape or that?

Here is a result of me playing around and putting them together. Unfortunately I was dumb and left the one piece out of the water, so it's not in a sinking mood. My other tank I dumped in tons of driftwood, and it came out great. Either it's easier with a lot, I got lucky, or I cared less...

    This hardscape or that?

Haha that makes sense. I'll need to work on my angles. I do know that turning on the light and turning off the flash doesn't work. I think I need to steal my sister's camera. The hardscape would be just the driftwood, although I haven't given much thought to rocks. Plant wise I'm going for...

    This hardscape or that?

Not sure if anyone has done this, but I bought a piece of dw at the lfs thinking it would look good. When I put it in the tank though, it really wasn't as I imagined it. Lucky for me I had some spare pieces left over from what I thought was a failed DIY driftwood project. I decided to play...

    Low tech lighting question

Thanks. I had built my original list around low light plants I found on theplantetank. After researching further I found that some were grown under low light but with CO2. I had to make some changes and replace a few species I had planned on. Guess I was just nervous about not having enough for...

    Low tech lighting question

I'm hoping to achieve a really nice lush, grown in look with a low tech setup. I guess the best thing to do is to order my plants and be patient as you said. I can always change the aquascape and experiment with other species that will work with the lighting if I feel it's not what I want.

    Low tech lighting question

The one time I tried live plants, I killed them so I'm even less of an expert than you. I'll be using ferts and maybe one day have CO2, just not now. As long as my plants live and grow I'll be happy. Plus the less money I spend on lighting, the more I have to spend on plants and fish.

    Low tech lighting question

I heard there's a recipe for DIY root tabs on here somewhere. I need to find it since I'm definitely planning a ton of root feeders.

    Low tech lighting question

Thanks. Growth is going to take me forever I guess since the only place I found some of those sells them without leaves. Guess I have to be patient. What do you have in your 29 gallon? Just curious.

    Low tech lighting question

Having finally decided on the plants I want in my low tech/ low light 29 gallon, I'm wondering if an increase in lighting would serve me better. If I ordered my plants right now they would be under a single 20w T8 6700k bulb. The plants I'm planning are Apogenton crispus, java fern, dwarf water...

    29 gallon planted nano

I'm thinking (well hoping) that a 20W Life-Glo T8 bulb should do the trick for me. I was told it should. For substrate I'm thinking maybe eco-complete? For the filter I'm looking at a Finnex 360. The fish (and snail) I'm trying to chose from are: glowlight danio goldring danio chili rasbora...

    29 gallon planted nano

That's where I got most of the list. :D I was using the Plant Finder Encyclopedia at Aquatic Plant Central as well to help make sure everything was Asian. No idea why I'm insisting on one region, guess it's just more fun.

    29 gallon planted nano

lol Trust me I'll be full of questions. Right now I'm trying to make a list of plants that will grow well in low light. The plan is to allow the watersprite to float, so I'm not sure how much light will reach below that. My jumbled and not fully researched plant list looks like this right now...

    29 gallon planted nano

I recently bought a 29 gallon tank and it's ben sitting in my room empty for a week. Time to shake off my mood and get down to planning this thing so I have something good happening. My goal is to do some sort of Southeast Asian lagoon. Well that's the look I'm hoping to get. I know almost...

    My 10 gallon tank

I'm not trying to be rude, but I do want to give it to you straight since I think maybe you got some bad information when you bought your tank. If you really want to improve it then either rehome some fish or get a much, much larger tank. I counted, I think, 8 or 9 rosy reds in there. They get...
