is there any chance you could..............please help

You can do it, but the water should be very clean and well-filtered. Some parameters may be interchangeable, but I am fairly certain that you will need a different pH kit. I have two at work...one for freshwater and one for SW. The kits for NH3/NO3/NO2 may be different as well.

Crushed coral & shells from the beach for tank?

Agreed. Boil the hell out of it all first. You may even use a strainer to get rid of any tag along sand. I tried that once...once...and I will never do it again. It turned my water a piss yellow color.

I will show that to my kids tonight and tell them that those are baby Nemo eggs. They'll get a kick out of that!

Nice pic! Has that sort of "Nemo" look to it... :D

    Clown Breeding

Interesting set up. I asked that because the systems that I have seen for finfish culture are set up to allow the larvae (and even fertile eggs at times) to be removed from the breeding tank through an overflow/skimmer of sorts. Once the eggs are removed from the tank, they are taken to the...

    First inverts, woohoo!

It's possible IMO. My hermits are striped leg hermits and the only problem I have with them is keeping them from climbing out of the tank by using the airline attached to my skimmer. (I know...cheesy design, but it's a work in progress...) The way I usually know I have a dead one is by finding...

    First inverts, woohoo!

What kind of hermits do you have that are so troublesome?

    Amputee Hermit...

It will probably regenerate after a couple of molts. Most Crustaceans can regenerate lost limbs. Portunid crabs do it all the time when they lose claws (chelipeds).

Honestly, high survivabilities like that don't really surprise me that much. I have heard of survivabilites between 80-90% with Premna and Amphiprion. IMHO, it all depends on the water quality and how well you are able to collect the newly hatched larvae. Speaking of, how do you collect them? Do...

    Do fish itch

Have you noticed any loose scales on the affected fish? I noticed some on one of my spotfins last night. It may be nothing more than an abrasion from contacting the LR or a chance incidental contact with the warty anemone, but I am watching it closely to make sure that the wound doesn't become...

    Protein Skimmer Question

Everything I have read says that a skimmer is a must in a smaller tank. After seeing the improvements in water quality in my little tank, I would have to agree. I'll make up some nice drawings and instructions once I get the bugs worked out of the designs and make sure that both skimmers work as...

    micro bubbles from skimmer

The skimmer I built for my 10-gal tank looks like it is working nicely. It is very simple to construct. I didn't even end up using PVC cement as the parts all fit together tightly. The larger one I made is in testing phase right now and if it works any better than the smaller one, I may modify...

    Protein Skimmer Question

FWIW, I just finished building two skimmers. One is a fairly small skimmer for my 10-gal tank and it seems to be working nicely. I haven't tested NH3/NO2/NO3 yet as I just put it into operation over the past weekend. The other one I built is larger and I am testing it out in a bucket of old...

    Clown Breeding

I didn't realize that the Artemia naups would be too large for a first feeding. They are used regularly for many other species of fish and inverts. Looks like you learn something new everyday after all.

    Saltwater tanks

Go to the local library and see if they have a copy of that book. Check it out for a few weeks then go back and check it out again for another few weeks. Get in the scientific literature and look for stuff on ornamental marine fish in general as well as articles regarding the species you want to...

    Clown Breeding

Yep. Most species of cultured finfish feed like that for first feeding. They are attracted to the movement. That's why I said to get a rotifer culture going or an Artemia culture established. IMO, larval brine shrimp would be great. They are nutritionally acceptable. Adult Artemia brine shrimp...

    Skimmer design and operation

Sorry I am not the best with MS Paint. This is a drawing of the skimmer I put together earlier today. It was foaming pretty good earlier, but it has since stopped belching stuff. The second drawing is the one I am going to finish tomorrow and experiment with. I bet it works better.

    Clown Breeding

I started reading up on clown culture a while back. They are supposedly pretty easy to culture. Maroon clowns are supposed to be pretty easy. I was looking into doing it myself. If I weren't considering buying a house and moving within a month, I would start a culture up right now. My friend and...

    Clown Breeding

It might work. I don't really know. If you are referring to cyclopoid copepods, then it would likely work. I have read that some clowns can be fed decapsulated Artemia, but you have to actually get the cysts and decapsulate them yourself unless you want to pay for them already decapsulated. If...

    Clown Breeding

From what I have seen and read, clowns are one of the easier species to breed. The mechanics of it involve several tanks, a REALLY good water purification system, and the willingness to stay on the job while you are hatching the young. First feeding is very important. You will also need culture...

    Skimmer design and operation

Well, I built it and after about 30 minutes of operation, it finally started dripping some foam. I'll snap pics of it as soon as I can. I don't have the digital camera at the moment. Anyway, here's a description of what I did. It seems to work okay for what it is. I knew I needed one when my...

    Skimmer design and operation

I have this design in mind for a small protein skimmer that could be built on the cheap. It is a simple cocurrent skimmer and would be built out of 2" PVC and some other easily obtained household stuff. I have a couple of questions for you fine people about this. 1.) What sorts of construction...

    micro bubbles from skimmer

One of my friends put a DIY skimmer in his 46-gal and it worked almost immediately from what he said. It is a very simple counter-current skimmer that uses an airstone to control flow out of the reaction chamber.
