    Skimmer design and operation

I have this design in mind for a small protein skimmer that could be built on the cheap. It is a simple cocurrent skimmer and would be built out of 2" PVC and some other easily obtained household stuff. I have a couple of questions for you fine people about this. 1.) What sorts of construction...

    Another aquarium/aquaculture site

Cephalopod aquaculture We also visited this facility. These guys use air lifts to move LARGE amounts of water all over the indoor facility with no mechanical pumps in the system. They are culturing squids, cuttlefish, and even octopus. It was absolutely amazing to see it in person.

    Sea Center Texas

Ladies and Gents, I just wanted to share this experience with you as it is directly related to our aquaria. I have been gone on a survey trip for the last two days for my Mariculture Techniques course. We hit every shrimp and redfish farm from Corpus Christi to Galveston. We also hit a couple of...

    Native species tank again

I kinda mentioned this the other night and got a couple of responses to it. I am looking into setting up a native species tank using seagrasses, invertebrates, and fish from the local area (Corpus Christi Bay system). The two little spotfins I have in my tank now (from Aransas Bay) seem to be...

    Tank observations for 9/27/04

I did a few water chem analyses tonight and jotted down a few notes. I was hoping you guys could make sense of it all. First of all, I did a gravel siphon and subseqent water replacement. Initial pH, NO3, and Kjedahl nitrogen levels were in spec AFAICT and are posted in another thread. Full...

    WQ test kits

Whats the one you like best? I currently use the Hach spectro and test reagents at work, but I can't use that forever. I am looking at getting a set of Hach colorimetric test kits. LaMotte kits are pretty much the same. Anyone else got any suggestions or comments?

    Wooden piling section as substrate

Has anyone else used a piece of wooden piling as a part of a tank or even part of the substrate? I saw a few pieces today that were covered with barnacles and periwinkles that would be pretty cool in a tank that was made up for a bay-type tank.

    Collecting trip

I went to the jetties today and did a few little plankton drags with an 83 micron net. That was just to satisfy a curiosity that was burning. I didn't really see any fish that were small enough to put in this little tank, so I went to another place in Rockport, TX. The beach park there (on...

    Anemone spit out some shrimp

I am not much of an expert on Actinarians.... I fed my warty anemone a chunk of shrimp yesterday and he seemed to readily accept it. This morning I looked and found about half of the chunk discarded on the live rock. I immediately removed the chunk of discarded shrimp and put it in the trash...

    Airlift to move water

Has anyone else ever used an airlift to move water between tanks? I came up with an idea that would allow moving water between tanks (i.e. sump and tank) at a very small rate. I want a very low flow in a fairly shallow water level without the turbulence that a powerhead could create. TIA for any...

    Desirable LR communities

What would you think are the most desirable organisms to have on a LR? Aside from the obvious nitrifying bacterial community, what else would you consider to be the most desirable macroinvert community to have? Do most of you just kinda toss the dice and take what you can get or do you try to...

Collecting trip on Port Aransas jetties

I think I have just about decided to go on a collecting trip this weekend. Anyone got any suggestions as to unique/interesting stuff I could get? I will probably hit the Port Aransas south jetty and use up my air tank charge looking for a nice piece of LR and other stuff like urchins and...

    Natural seawater opinions

This has probably already been covered somewhere...sorry if it's a repost. I live less than 100 yards from Copano Bay in Texas and I work at a shrimp mariculture facility in Port Aransas, TX. I can get oceanic seawater (salinity 32-35 ppt) and bay seawater (salinity 25-30 ppt) from a variety of...

Maybe a unique idea for an invert tank

I just had a pretty cool idea and I was wondering if anyone had done this before... In the course of getting my M.S., I have worked extensively in the shrimp mariculture field and I have seen some bizarre ecosystems in shrimp farm ponds. I have also done a good bit of work in the estuarine...

    LTA advice

I just got a new LTA (Macrodactyla doreenensis) and I introduced it to the tank last night. It looks really good, but I had a few questions about it. I did the usual temperature/salinity acclimitazition procedure that I would normally follow and the LTA didn't open up for several...

    New guy with UGF questions

Great forum! I have been looking for something like this for about a week. I just started a new tank that will be my "start up" or "quarantine" tank that I use to watch new animals before I introduce them to my other tank...a 110-gallon reef tank. I am toying with the idea of an undergravel...
