One thing to consider is your local water properties. Local water chemistry may lend itself to keeping certain fish. It's much easier and less stressful to not have to constantly adjust and monitor your water parameters

make sure the rhizomes on those java ferns are up out of the substrate. For liquid fertilizer i recommend kent pro-plant. I've had great results with it for those exact type of plants without using CO2. They didn't get huge right away, but they did get big after a year or so.

Lived in Humboldt for like 8 years. Arcata, Eureka, and McKinleyville Fin n Feather a great lfs. balanced aquarium also quite nice. Right before I left town a shop opened up in McKinleyville. it's the one with the insanely large display tank. Like 1600 gallons or something like that.
