Thanks jlk! I'm just getting started. Gonna add some things to the tank in a couple weeks. I'm not overly excited about he color of the gravel but the wife and I thought it would look nice...until we saw it in the tank. I have a feeling I will be changing to sand sometime in the future.
I want to say thank you to all in this forum. You folks made my jump back in to the hobby a great experience. The many threads I read were a great help! I appreciate your patience with my impatience. My 6 Serpae Tetras and my one Red Tailed Shark also thank you as their introduction in to my...
Above is the wide shot of my 40 gal tank. It is 5 weeks old today. Fishless cycle complete with 6 Serpae Tetras (I call them "the girls") and one Red Tailed Shark I call "Stud".
Introducing..."The Girls"
Introducing..."The Stud" right in front of the bright pink fake plant...
It's update time! What a wild ride in one week. I thought my readings as of my last post were pretty consistent but then the weirdness began. I did a 90% water change to try to get my nitrates down after two days of ammonia and nitrites being zero but my Nitrates were still through the roof...
You have taught me too well jlk! Once I settled down from the excitement of 0.0 Nitrates I came to my senses and dosed ammonia back up to 4.0 and will look at the results tomorrow. I got a big kick out of the "Wait, wait, wait!!!" you started your post with, it gave me a belly laugh.
Well I guess mother nature was just trying to show me she is in charge here! :eyes: The magic finally happened!
4/11/12
Ammonia 0.0 ppm
Nitrites 0.0 ppm
Nitrates .80 ppm
ph 7.6
ph high 8.2
Ok, is it time for a 90% water change to get the Nitrates under...
Also Gish, I appreciate you saying 52 isn't old and I happily agree. My kids tease me regularly that 52 is old. They love to refer to my teen and twenty years as "back in the day"!
On occasion I can surprise them with some very limited and short lasting athletic ability and remind them...
Today's water tests. Refer to previous posts for water test history. jlk I think you were right. I didn't read the nitrite result right on 4/7/12. I decided to go ahead and dose ammonia back up to 4.0 ppm because I'm going to be rather busy for the next couple of days so I can't do anything...
Gish, thanks for clearing up your "tortured" remark. I apologize for not taking it "tongue and cheek". jlk is right, I have only had to do one water change so far and that was my reason for doing a fishless cycle. I'm on old guy (52) who used to have an aquarium some thirty odd years ago...
Very well. I didn't realize I was torturing anyone. I wanted to do a fishless cycle to save from having to do a bunch of water changes. Hmmm...guess I'll just go about my business.
I'm old so anything is possible when reading the test results!
I will not dose with ammonia again and we will see what happens tomorrow. Sincerely, thank you for all of your help jlk!
As far as the flora, I've never had live plants in an aquarium. I think I'm gonna walk before I run and stick with plastic plants until I feel comfortable with the fauna part of things. Our plan is to start with six serpae tetra. Then follow up with 6 Panda Cory, a bristlenose pleco, 3 Dwarf...
I recommend using a 1ml medicine dropper to dispense the ammonia. Pretty hard for even a klutz like me to have a spill and being 1 ml for each squeeze keeps it in line with the calculator used jlk linked you to.
