    Community Tank Treatments

I have a few different tanks, from a 5.5g nano sw fowlr, 45g sw fowlr, 5g java moss, feeder snails & shrimp, 65g African Cichlids and a 10g freshwater nano community. All contain inverts and/or scaleless cats, cories or botia. So treatments for illness have been scary for one reason or another...

Moving GSPs/Cichlids to bigger tanks checklist?

I believe you are correct! To clarify my procedure though, the canister went on the new 60g. with cichlids' seeded media. I didn't get a canister for the brackish puffer 45g tank. The new-ish C4 HOB was used in first 12 days with seeded brackish media. I definitely recommend your recommendations...

Moving GSPs/Cichlids to bigger tanks checklist?

Forgot to mention, my cichlids move was so smooth! Their seeded media from the C4 was moved to a new Fuval canister system on the 60 gallon tank. I only added an inexpensive submersible Top Fin filter 40g with spray bar for circulation and backup. In the same three weeks, the water has been...

Moving GSPs/Cichlids to bigger tanks checklist?

Well, I had no replies here, but I got to ask a marine biologist to affirm my plan, so I went with it. Over a week's time I got to step 6. A week went by to make sure the water tested correctly. Around the 12th day, the tests (API strip & API liquid tests for ammonia & nitrite when I started...

    Sponge Prefilters

I use the blue sponge filter refills from the Top Fin Internal Filter on my HOB intake tubes. They are perfect. Take out the carbon, rinse & slip it on. There are three sizes. There is a little round 'plug' of the same blue foam to cover the carbon, I use it to fill any gap if it's slipping off...

Moving GSPs/Cichlids to bigger tanks checklist?

I'm moving Gimlet & Absinthe from a 20g long, 1.012 brackish, to a 45g established African Cichlid tank. Both tanks read the same in water testing, all good, of course the Ph reads higher for the brackish water. I'm planning to do the following steps, and want to know if I'm on the right track...

    Surprise Babies!!!

It's been ten days since my big 'discovery' and last night I noticed ONE MORE! Must've been hiding in a deep spot, doesn't look as big or well-nourished as the ones I've been watching. Guess s/he got brave and decided to look for some food! This new one is about 1/2" and the others are about...

    Surprise Babies!!!

All five are doing great! I'm really surprised at how territorial they were, from the day I discovered them. Growing & changing so quickly, they don't have that new fry transparency already. Just teeny versions of their tankmates now ??!

    Surprise Babies!!!

I just found five 'surprise' fry a few days ago in my tank of six "mixed cichlids" and one pictus catfish. They were about 1/4" three days ago, and nearly 1/3" today. I have plenty of plastic plants, logs and caves to hide, so I have no clue who the parents are or how many didn't survive. I've...

    Dwarf puffer help please

I have a 3gal tank with just black sand it already had, Java moss, Java fern and anubia in a bundle right under the filter flow. Free snails from pet shop and some pebbles & clam shells for calcium and to balance water parameters. This is my feeder tank for Spotted Puffers. Your dwarf puffers...

    post your cichlid setup here!

It is a Ram's Horn Snail, not a "snake." They usually come into a tank with plants. You can smash them before they start rapidly reproducing, and the fish will eat them.

    post your cichlid setup here!

Danios have been with them since the cichlids were 1.25", to make the cichlids come out from hiding. They really don't bother each other. Will keep an eye out, though.

    post your cichlid setup here!

New 45gal, Fluval 70 HOB, seeded from previous starter tank media, six 'mixed' African cichlids and four zebra danios. Caribsea African Cichlid sand & some white NatGeo gravel.

    Converted FW to brackish plants

I just changed a rift tank to brackish last week and moved anubias and java moss from a brackish 5g tank running for a month. I am keeping a couple lucky bamboo from the FW inside a Whisper internal. It had a couple new shoots, and I'm hoping at 1.010 gravity, they will keep up the growth. We'll...

Can I add just one bolivian ram to my tank?

I have a healthy full-sized GBR who lost its mate to illness. He seems to be happy, with ghost shrimp of all sizes and a surviving oto, in a big puff of Java fern keeping the tank clean.

    post your cichlid setup here!

An infamous batch of "Mixed African Cichlids (small)" After much research and noted warnings, this 20g long had been running 2yrs as a low Ph, mopani wooded tank, with low light plants and assorted tetras. Rescaped in January with lots of 'hidey holes' and water replaced to work with our...

Planted tank, Ich on rainbows and Cory's

Wondering how your treatment turned out. Not sure how much allowance you made for the lower level of water you mention. I'm having the reverse issue with one of three new cories showing ich, in a tank with rainbows and tetras. How did you calculate the amount of salt, was it 1tbsp. per gallon...

    New/young GBR pairing up

I had a second spawning last week, but in their community tank they were freaking out by all the fish invading their space. It got to the point they were totally ignoring the eggs and facing off with each other. I got a floating breeder box and faced the slits toward the filter outflow, dropped...

    New/young GBR pairing up

Welll, no surprise, they made a meal of it by dinner time yesterday. By the morning they stopped guarding and harrassing the others. I had read they would probably eat the eggs a few times before figuring it out. Such is life.

    New/young GBR pairing up

Here's a slightly better pic of Blue Boy, s/he does not want to turn to the side, facing off to the camera at all times. S/he seems to be hovering over or close to eggs more, Pinkie is guarding the perimeter.

    New/young GBR pairing up

Dawn Patrol. Here is my ever evolving confusion... Pinkie (foreground) has changed to blue with a clear black spot, Blue Boy's (background) pink belly swelled up in the past week (could it be brine shrimp pellets & peas?) and has less blue on body, more faded blueish spotting over the black...

    New/young GBR pairing up

So five weeks later, the two had split up shortly after I had claimed a pairing. Each on opposite corners of the tank. I began adding cichlid flake food, smashed peas and frozen blood worms into the rotation of community tank feeding just for variety. They would meet up at the front of the tank...

    New/young GBR pairing up

I realize now, a previous attempt at digging a pit was made in the same area, but I just thought it odd, because I didn't see them do it the first time and they didn't seem to hang around. Seems like they stay at the front more now, with lots of time together behind those outside plants. I've...
