    Snails, Mulm, & Cleaning

My plants are not quite densely packed though they do cover the entire bottom. I would easily be able to clean around them except for the fact that I fear damaging their roots. From what it sounds like there should be a balance between plants and nitrates that I might not quite be able to...

    Snails, Mulm, & Cleaning

A few months ago, after reading in numerous places that planted tanks did not require-and in fact benefited from-not cleaning deep into the gravel to get out the mulm, I started to do so. The problem is that now there are snails everywhere. Should I clean the gravel or not? I believe they...

    Betta is Bloated

I suppose there is also information here on something similar but aside from that I'm afraid I can't help much: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f17/bloated-dg-238215.html

    Betta is Bloated

I would try to give it a pea. Take off the thin shell and crush it up. Not sure how often, maybe every other feeding? If it has dropsy you might be able to see pineconey scales that stick out. My fish that have had dropsy lasted only a few days, but I don't know.

    Prevent Dropsy

I've been reading up on it and I think the overall consensus is that its not bad to over filtrate but it can be bad to create powerful currents?

    Prevent Dropsy

I'll be able to test the water soon with a second 50% water change also. But I was wondering, I have an extra twenty gallon filter with minimal water flow. Would it be beneficial to add that to the tank and try to seed it with media from a different aquarium? Would you recommend that someone...

    Prevent Dropsy

Stock level? You mean?: Stocked with: 1 adult guppy (dead) ~1.5 in female 3 juvenile guppies ~1in 4baby guppies ~ 1cm It's hard to measure with the tails

    Prevent Dropsy

I can't measure PH above 8.4 and it near maxes out my tests so I'm not sure but it is quite alkaline water. Can this also have detrimental effects on bacteria growth? It is quite alkaline and hard even right out the faucet, and I heard it is slightly more acidic while the chlorine is still in...

    Prevent Dropsy

It is a 10 gallon aquarium, little over a year old Stocked with: 1 adult guppy (dead) ~1.5 in female 3 juvenile guppies ~1in 4baby guppies ~ 1cm It's hard to measure with the tails I use extra "top-fin water conditioner" after waiting 24 hours to release gases just in case. I add it to the...

    5 Gallon Cichlid

Yea, I think between the two I would choose the Apisto. I might like a GBR slightly more or less in looks but they seem more sensitive and I have hard water. Actually they both prefer soft. Given my hard water do you know any rift lake cichlids which might be slightly more comfortable...

    Prevent Dropsy

I just tested it Ammonia: 0.1-0.25 ppm Nitrite: 0.5-1.0 ppm Nitrate: 0-0.1ppm These aren't that bad are they? I probably shouldn't have ammonia in a year old tank if I'm doing it right, right? Why is my nitrite moderately high but almost no Nitrate? Last week I did a fifty percent water...

    Prevent Dropsy

A couple of my guppies have gotten dropsy lately and I was wondering what the cause might be? They both got fat right away and showed pointy scales and within a few days in which they stopped eating they died. I heard that it was noncommunicable, and both times I tried to feed them peas but...

    30 and ten gallons

Or maybe the black molly's name is mountain dew and it went insane? Yup, I like natural aquariums also. Maybe add a few medium-small rocks as well

    5 Gallon Cichlid

Both Ideas are great, either of which I might do. I do get fry every once in a while and might be able to put some hardy plants along with the rocks in it since they'll be too small to dig them out. I also think that shell dwellers are interesting if I can manage to pull off the territory...

    5 Gallon Cichlid

I am wondering if for Shelldwellers it is not the floor space that matters. In that case, the Marineland Crescent might have a similar amount of territory to a ten gallon. Perhaps enough for three?

    starter fish

I think that it would work if you were to have juveniles. There would be less aggression, and you may be able to set up a portion of your stock in that aquarium. Then, I would add the other fish to the 60 gallon for a day or two before adding the set community, to even out the playing field.

    Tank ideas

Well if you like cichlids there are German Blue Rams, Bolivian Rams, Pelvicachromis Pulcher. Or else there is the Golden Killifish or Dwarf/Honey Guarami, or Upside-down Catfish. These are pretty easy to find, but not exactly standard- like the Apistogramma Cacatoides.

    New Tank/Fish Question

It's probably good that you're taking them back. I think guaramis generally like less hectic tankmates and are slow moving so the pecking of the barbs would likely hurt them. I don't know how much aggression of tiger barbs can be mitigated within a twenty gallon. Neons are also fragile...

    5 Gallon Cichlid

I was thinking of getting a Marineland Crescent 5 Gallon. I was wondering what people might think of putting a single cichlid in it. I have some mbuna right now and their sizes range from 3-6 inches (Cynotilapia Afra, yellow lab, Acei). I know that its behavior would not necessarily be the...

Unexpected breeding with cichlids, need to know proper care

It is hard to tell the scale of the fish but it seems to be smaller than a minnow. I would say around three weeks perhaps. If it were the size of a minnow I might guess two months. Not positive on the this though. Your lab is indeed holding, the bottom of its mouth will distend slightly and...

    Suggested tank mates?

I also hear that crayfish aren't very good with fish, especially at night when they go hunting. I would think that the cherry barbs, if they are like other barbs, are fin nippers which aren't good with the angel. If I were to suggest something it would probably be an apistogramma cacatoides...

    Yellow Lab is holding...

Generally I just release them straight from my breeder net at about a half inch. It depends on what you have in the tank I guess. I had Afra, Yellow Labs, and Acei and the fry seemed to do fine, although pushed around a little, so long as you mix around the rocks when adding the fish. I put...

    Coloring up?

I think my cynotilapia afra color up at around 2 inches but you cant tell that much since they're highly subdominant at that point. The 1-1.5 inch ones often even fade so you can't see their stripes. At about two inches they definitely start taking on a little bit purple, I have a couple at...

Unexpected breeding with cichlids, need to know proper care

Generally the fish will eat the fry. Interesting that you did not notice but the labidochromis caeruleus is a mouthbrooder so she must have had the fry in her mouth for weeks before releasing it. What I do is hang a breeder net off the side so that the fry get stable water but are safe from...

    Entire batch crooked spines

Is it common for an entire batch to have crooked spines? According to genetics I would have thought that only a half to three quarters at most would have spine deformities since neither the father nor the mother had any noticeable deformities. Only one was really bad but I still hope to breed...
