the one I tied down has a large root system that cover the whole driftwood almost (combo of large roots and small driftwood). As a coincidence, it seems this plant was designed for the piece of driftwood. All of the major root coincide with a grove on the driftwood. Kind of freaky.

mine isn't a horror story. My tanks were lightly loaded and all fish survived the normal cycling. The product just didn't instant cycle me. And yes, I did use it a situation as a "rescue" because I thought some of the cheap "fake" stuff would work and then my levels went all crazy on me.

It's pretty easy to enhance the filter on the eclipse 12. Look for a thread by me in the DIY forum. It seems to be able to keep up with a rather large population (I'm probably pushing it). Water parameters are still all good.

and by looking at your tank, seems like you have algae eaters already. I'd be surprised if the 4 otos and hte pleco can't keep it clean for algea. The cories might outcompete the shrimp for food at the bottom if they are anything like the cories I have.
