Aquarium is the latest hurricane victim

My family and I evacuated our home in Slidell, Louisiana for hurricane Katrina and we are now living temporarily in Houston. Although our home survived the storm we are not allowed to stay there until basic services are restored in the community in a few weeks. I did manage to get into town via...

    Need LTA Advice

Well it finally had to happen. I came home from work today and found my LTA looking horrible. His foot had almost flattened and lost its pink coloring, his tentacles were laying flat in the sand and had deflated considerably, and he was beginning to look slimy. I don't know if he had died but if...

    Need LTA Advice

Just got home and checked on my LTA. He's in the same spot in the back of the tank laying in the sand. It looks like a very small part of his foot is attached to the glass. Mouth is wide open. Tentacles are moving very slowly, many still look deflated. His once dark pink pedastel seems like it...

    Need LTA Advice

The saga continues..... Last night my LTA was still attached to the rock as he was in the morning. I did notice, however, his overall appearance seemed to be declining. His mouth was wide open, his tentacles appeared to be somewhat shorter, and several of his tentacles were partially...

    Need LTA Advice

Latest news..... My LTA spent the day yesterday, like I said before, on his side in the sand against a rock. This morning he was attached to the rock about 6 inches above the sand. I guess he likes moving arround in the dark when just the lunar lights were on. Rather than try to locate him...

    Need LTA Advice

Fluff, I have a feeling he may have been bleached. This one is actually a light green color (looks white in photo), but all the other LTAs were dark green. The LFS said lightgreen was a natural color not bleached, but I'm not so sure anymore. I have Aquaclear powerheads with Quickfilters...

    Need LTA Advice

I bought my first anemone yesterday and could use some advice on its care. See the photos below (taken with a flash and actinics). I bought a Long Tentacle Anemome. The LFS convinced me it would be better for me because it settles in one place unlike a BTA which tends to roam and sometimes gets...

Need Help for my Hairy Mushrooms!!!

Well here's the latest. This morning I discovered a red legged crab eating something meaty. Then I noticed the mushroom at the bottom middle of the rock near the sand (you can see it in the photo above) was comming apart. It had some loose tissue (whitish looking) swaying in the current. Looks...

Need Help for my Hairy Mushrooms!!!

I could sure use some advice on whats happening with my Hairy Mushrooms! I've had a five inch long piece of rock with several Hairy Mushrooms on it in my tank for a few weeks. They looked great..... very full and gently moving with the water movement. They were so full, the rock was barely...

    Sunlight causing algae problems?

I had a serious outbreak of brown algae after moving my tank. It was all over the sand, glass, and rocks... looked horrible. I invested in 10 Mexican Turbo Snails from liveaquaria.com and these guys cleaned it up in no time at all. These guys are big, almost golf ball sized, don't confuse them...

    good news

Try mushrooms. Thats what I started with and I'm real happy with them. Very hardy, require medium light and water movement and easy to care for. Check out the different varieties at liveaquaria.com . Good luck!

    Running Out of Room

Great! I'll try it... out with the filter & in with the UV. One more question. What will the UV sterilizer do to my water temperature. Im already at 79-80 degrees F?

    Running Out of Room

Hi all !!! I'd like to add a Turbo Twist UV sterilizer to my tank, but I'm running out of HOB room on the back glass. I presently have 2 powerheads, a filter, heater, and a protein skimmer with surface skimmer box taking up all but a couple of inches back there. I don't want to add a...

    Whats this???

Found this in my tank last night and have no idea what it is. Any thoughts? Good or bad? It is on the inside of the front glass and is about 1.25 inches tall. Its not moving so I suspect its attached to the glass. Kinda looks like a small string of pearls. Thanks, John

    Bubbles Galore!

Thanks for the advice "sdellin". I'll try adjusting the protein skimmer again tonight to see if I can get the same results. I've been away from the forum for a few days... had to dodge hurricane Dennis.

    Panic.... Overnight Disaster!

Thanks for all the advice! Things have gotten much better. The algae/diatom bloom is under control. After cutting back on my lights, stepping up on water changes, and adding a cleanup crew things are pretty much back to normal. Thanks again!

    Panic.... Overnight Disaster!

Thanks for all your comments. Got home from the rock pile about an hour ago and got to work checking parameters. Here's the poop... SG = 1.021 ph = 8.2 (its usually 7.8 to 8.0) Alk = Lower end of Normal range (its usually in the middle of Normal) Amonia = 0 Nitrite = 0 Nitrate = 20 (its usually...

    Panic.... Overnight Disaster!

Need alot of advice on this one..... I couldn't believe my eyes this morning when I looked into my aquarium on my way out the house. My white sand substrate, live rocks, and glass were covered with a thick brown layer of brown algae or diatoms. I went to bed last night with the tank looking...

    Bubbles Galore!

I've been trying to do as you suggested 'schoeplein' but no luck. In fact, I shut off the protein skimmer for awhile and no change to the bubbles at all. They really do seem to be a product of the filter more than anything else. The rotation speed of the biowheel has some affect on the quantity...

    Bubbles Galore!

Thanks for the comments FlyingLO and midol. The problem isn't with the protein skimmer, its working fine with the bubble eliminator box; no bubbles there. I run my powerheads without the air intake tube and the intake is located about two to three inches below the surface of the water.

    Bubbles Galore!

I've got millions of tiny bubbles everywhere in my tank and can't seem to get rid of them. Most of them seem to originate from the HOB filter, but when I shut it off the powerheads seem to discharge some as well. I keep the water level high and the biowheel in the filter rotates at a slow speed...

    Testing Supplies Advice

Does anyone have any experience with electronic test equipment? I was about to order some new testing supplies when I saw these two gadgets at Drs Foster & Smith that looked kinda neat. They have a Hanna Instruments pHep4 that measures ph and temperature and a DIST5 that measures conductivity...
