    Low Tech Lighting Upgrade

Do you have any any algae issue running it in 24/7 mode? I see the new version of the 24/7 actually turns off for a few hours in the night -- however, it's obviously more.

    Low Tech Lighting Upgrade

Getting back into the hobby after a bit. Trying to do some lighting research, but I always kind of feel lost. I read up the pinned topics at the top, but the beginner lighting guide doesn't even mention LED lights. Right now I have a 20 gallon high tank. The tank is stocked and is also...

    Bummer. Sorry to hear.

    Stocking 20 High

Trying to get some ideas and do research for future additions to my 20 gallon high. Right now I have 6 platies -- or 5 platies and 1 molly. It's a long story. It's a planted tank with a piece of mopani wood. The substrate is sand (or at least crushed gravel -- it's this stuff...

    Mistakes Were Made

Well, I'd like to report all seems well. I had been doing a water change every other day and all signs of possible ich have been gone for a few days. Started to slowly change the temperature back down last night. Tank seems to be fully cycled. No ammonia or nitrites since this past weekend...

    Toxic Seachem Prime?

Prime can really stink, plain and simple. I highly doubt it is what killed the fish, and I also wonder if you made contact with it in you eyes. How much spilled?

    Mistakes Were Made

Well, I did a water change a few hours ago. My tap water contains .25ppm nitrites and after doing a test a few minutes ago, I'm already back down to 0ppm. Looks like I'm cycled or almost completely cycled.

What Made You Want A Freshwater Aquarium?

The Cory will do much better with some friends as they're a schooling fish, however, you'd really need to get a bigger tank to make that happen.

    Mistakes Were Made

I really need to set up a quarantine tank. Hard to convince the GF it's not just another aquarium in the house. Might try to go to Petco today and grab a 10 gallon while they're still on sale. She'll just have to deal with it!

New To Freshwater Tropical Fish and Wanting Advice on Lighting

The other plant looks like water wisteria to me. It also seems like you have some natural light that is making its way into the tank, so I think between that and that light in that small of a tank, if should be fine. Those are all pretty easy plants to grow and don't need a ton of light.

    Mistakes Were Made

Oh, boy! When I tested nitrites yesterday morning, they were somewhere between .5 and 1ppm. I ended up dosing with Prime and kept checking the nitrites every few hours. To my surprise, but early after noon they were down to under .5 and then to about .25 by early evening. Last night before I...

    Mistakes Were Made

Well, I lost one of the fish today. It was the one I was worried about, but he was always kind of off from the other fish, so there may have been something else going on with him that was compounded by the crappy water situation. The other fish seem to be doing fine. In fact, there is only...

    TOTAL DUH *face palm* moment

Oh, of course. You had said you were on well water. Well, I wonder if anything with the water had recently changed. If it was anything with nitrites and nitrates, I would imagine the tank should have still be able to handle them, but perhaps they were really high? I guess it's hard to say...

What did you condition the water with?

    TOTAL DUH *face palm* moment

Maybe there is something I'm missing here, but why would a water change, even one that large, cause your tank to re-cycle?

    Starting a new tank soon

I've always used Aqueon heaters. I've never had one go bad, but I do question how accurate they are sometimes -- but I suppose that could be a problem with most of them. I've always been happy with Fluval filters. Picked up an AquaClear this last time because the price was right. It's nice...

    Mistakes Were Made

Use the loo and grab a drink, as this might wind up being a long read. After being out of the fish game for a bit, I was able to convince the girlfriend to let me set up a tank in our new house, however, she capped me at 20 gallons. A little lame, but I figured after awhile she'd give into the...

    First Tank (Long & Detailed)

Those numbers are great! I'd test again in a week. If your ammonia and nitrites are still 0, then you're in good shape. Just change the water whenever your nitrates are 20 or 40PPM.

    Should I go with a 20gal or 29gal tank

I'm coming in a little late, but I'll also chime in and recommend the 29 gallon. It's what I had once upon a time -- couldn't really go any bigger because it was in an apartment. Good size and great depth (only makes it a little harder if you're wanting to do plants). Gives you plenty of...

    Plants melting

From what I've read, swords are heavy root feeders. You might want to try to pick up some root tabs and shove them under the substrate near the swords and see if that starts to help.

My plants keep splitting in color

If you look at that back leaf, it looks like it is two different colors. That could be what the OP is talking about.

    Cloudy Water! Help!

I'll give a little response and wait for the experts to come along for the best advice! Firstly, that tank is too small for probably 1 goldfish, let along 3. Also, goldfish are cold water fish, so they're probably not going to appreciate the heated tank. The cloudy water could be cause by...

    Platy Question

Most of the Platys I've kept have done this, but they've not had any health issues -- for what it's worth.

Where am at with my light?

I actually wouldn't have guessed it would be even that (of course, I am not an expert when it comes to light). So, if I were to pick up another deluxe light, would you say that would be enough to provide about medium light (about 18 inches to the bottom with the lights mounted on the top)...

Where am at with my light?

I know this post is several months old now, but I recently got back into the aquarium hobby and setup up a 29 gallon tank. When picking up some items from PetSmart, I saw the exact same light mentioned here (24 inch NatGeo Deluxe Programmable) and picked it up after reading a little bit about...
