    Breeding eastern grass shrimp

I have had an eastern grass/glass/ghost shrimp (Palaemonetes paludosus) alone in one of my tanks for a couple months. Recently, I discovered that she had babies when I noticed two small shrimp swimming around the tank. Immaculate conception aside, these shrimp are supposedly difficult to breed...

    Biotope Invertebrates

Alright, I'll look into that. I also read that there is an Amazon glass shrimp, but I can't seem to find any information about it. Only that it exists. That says to me that it would probably be hard to get them.

Daphnia What exactly do they need to survive long term? I've heard they can be difficult.

    Biotope Invertebrates

I found that Pomacea maculata and Pomacea haustrum come from Peru, but there are some problems with these species. First of all, they are hard to find. Second, they get really big (bigger than any of the fish I plan to keep). And third, from what I understand, snails can be bad for planted...

    Biotope Invertebrates

I am very slowly working on a Peruvian biotope. I have found tons of information on fish and plants that I could use and I have come up with a list of ones that I plan to get, but I have not been able to find information on invertebrates. Are there not many Amazonian invertebrates in the...

    What's growing in my tank?!

Yes, they are all over the glass and not really anywhere else in the tank.

    What's growing in my tank?!

I stumbled upon a picture of Bryozoans and they looked kind of like what's in my tank. Apparently, freshwater species are uncommon, but maybe I happened to get some?

    DIY 29 gallon aquarium stand

So I designed a light fixture based on the AH Supply DIY fixtures to be hung over the tank. I'm still not sure if the drawer will work out, but it looks great.

    DIY 29 gallon aquarium stand

Redesign So I looked at some ADA tank stands to see how they do it, and I looked at the stand I have some more and I did a redesign. I think what I have is pretty excellent right now. The whole thing would be made from 3/4" plywood (cut almost exclusively into rectanglular pieces), which is...

    DIY 29 gallon aquarium stand

I was examining the stand that I have my 16 gallon on, and it is infinitely less reinforced than my blueprint. I think I will do a little retooling. It's not like I'm going to have the tank and a couple people on the stand. Also, how come tank stands never have drawers? I want mine to have a...

    DIY 29 gallon aquarium stand

I was considering putting CO2 underneath. I mostly don't like the shape that the frame creates inside. I don't want to have to cut out that complicated shape for the base shelf. I'd like a rectangle inside, ideally.

    DIY 29 gallon aquarium stand

So I have been unhappy with what my fish tank has been sitting on for a while now (an old TV stand). After getting ideas and doing research, I came up with a design. I am basing it on the modern-looking ADA stands that I like so much. I then drew the design out on paper and then created it in...

    Proper planted tank wattage?

Wow, that's a huge drop in pH. I'm just going to start with one bottle and see how that goes. I'd like to do 2 x 1L but 1 liter bottles are hard to come by. Anyway, thanks for the info!

    Proper planted tank wattage?

Oh cool. And did you start one a couple weeks after the other? I don't know if two would be too much for my tank. But I'm excited at the prospect of faster plant growth. My only worry would be pH fluctuations.

    Proper planted tank wattage?

Ah, okay. I see that I have more to learn than I thought. But no one wants algae all over so I'll try to keep it balanced. But the lighting information is so helpful. And I was considering doing the soda bottle/yeast CO2 injector for the time being. That's supposed to be effective, right?

    What's growing in my tank?!

They don't look like hydras to me, but I have gotten a better picture of them, so let me know what you think.

    Proper planted tank wattage?

Wow, that was extremely informative. I appreciate that very much. Yes, the tank is a 29 gallon. Why would less light be appropriate without pressurized CO2, but more light would be appropriate with it. I mean, why couldn't you have low light and CO2 injection or high light and no extra CO2?

New to planted and need advice

For a more DIY approach, you could do a thin layer of crushed up Vermiculate (for aeration) with a thicker layer of loam (for nutrients), topped with as much as an inch of gravel (to hold the plants in place). The very thick layer of substrate allows a huge, healthy root system to develop. If...

    Proper planted tank wattage?

I was considering a DIY tank lighting setup. I have seen some pretty nice creations online. After researching all sorts of related things, it seems that the most difficult bit would be finding the right light bulbs. I want to use fluorescent lighting because it's low cost and easy to get a...

    What's growing in my tank?!

After inspecting the little things, I would have to guess that they are not Vorticella colonies. They're a little too organized. I wish I could somehow magnifiy one and take a picture of it.

I'm new da ba dee da ba die

I'm from the US and I maintain two tanks. I joined this site because I have an issue with one of my aquariums. I have been an avid aquarist for a few years now. I'm always on the lookout for a cheaper way to maintain an aquarium, and I'm most interested in biotopes and aquascapes. I'm a big fan...
