    Why do I have to cycle my tank?

    I know this may be a dumb question, but why is cycling a tank important? Why couldn't one just add de-chlorinator and Quick Start API to a fish tank at the beginning and with every water change? That keeps all the harmful chemicals (ammonia, nitrate, etc) away.

    Are colored gravel/plants safe?

    The guy at my LFS told me that colored gravel and colored plants aren't safe for aquariums. He said that bottom dwellers on the colored gravel will start to lose their limbs (ie African dwarf frog) and the cories' barbells will get shorter because they're being burned off on the colored gravel...
