    cichild stock/restocking question

Hi Josh7, you were very nice about it. I will keep my nitrates under 40ppm from now on and see what happens. The guy who sold us the tank and the fish said he did monthly water changes. I don't know if he was lying (about how little maintenance a fish tank needs to sell us on it) or if it was...

    cichild stock/restocking question

Water is ok ammonia and nitrites are 0 and nitrates at 40ppm - and I know, some of you will jump and say that's too high. It's just that the guy who sold me the tank a year ago kept his nitrates between 40 and 160ppm (!). Fish were doing fine. I just have too many look alike male fish. Got 4...

Need advice to go from 2 feedings to 1

Wow, cichlids can go two weeks without food! I have read one week was usually ok, but I did not know they could go that long. I will start frequent feedings then. Thanks for the tip about leaving the phone number of someone who knows about fish keeping.

Need advice to go from 2 feedings to 1

Hi, We are going on vacation for a few days and will have somebody come over feed the fish and the cat. I ususally feed the fish twice a day but the petsitter can only stop by once a day. I will give the petsitter a pillbox with fish food inside so I can control how much he puts in the tank...

    cichild stock/restocking question

Ok, will go get more rocks first then try to introduce new fish. I do have a type of plastic grid (egg crate?) on the bottom of the tank and grind the rocks down so they touch the grid. The fish can't dig under them. Will keep you posted.

    cichild stock/restocking question

Thanks for replying! I was just warned by the previous owner of the tank about "falling rocks" so have been afraid to stack things in case the fish run into them and knock rocks down. Any suggestion on the species to add? Here is a bad pic from my ipad. Hope this helps.

    cichild stock/restocking question

I have had recurring problems with fish dying (about one or two every two weeks). Just happened this morning too and would like some advice about restocking or adjusting my stock. It seems like the fish are going after the weaker one in the tank, and when it dies, they go after the next weaker...

amazon planted vs african cichlid, which is better for a newbie?

Thanks This is a long overdue update. I went with the 125g and it's great. The maintenance is very easy - except for cleaning the filter but that only happens every other month! Thank you for your advice!

    Hi, from a newbie

Thanks for all the welcome wishes! My husband and I actually took the plunge and bought a complete set up (after helpful feedback from AA): 125g tank african cichlid from a guy here in town. We will hire him for the first 6 months or so to learn how to take care of it. Moving it next weekend...

amazon planted vs african cichlid, which is better for a newbie?

Thank you for the replies! The size of the 125 gallon tank was daunting to me, especially thinking that each water change would be 25 gallons or so. I will check the structure of the floor of my house and see if I can house it.

    Hi, from a newbie

Hi everyone, I do not own a tank yet, but I am seriously thinking about it. My husband and I bought our very first house last year and there is a nice big blank wall near our entrance - perfect placement! We have always wanted an aquarium but moved way too much (3 times) in the past 6 years to...

amazon planted vs african cichlid, which is better for a newbie?

Hi, I am (completely) new to aquarium keeping and I am considering the following two options. They would basically be already established aquarium from craigslist, although fish will get shocked by the move. Which one would be easiest to maintain for a newbie? My husband and I are willing to put...
