Anyone running a tank with no substrate?

An anyone tell me what this is? It appears to be some sort if algae, maybe? I don't believe it's Cyano as it can't be "scrubbed" off the rock. It's only on two of my rock which have zoanthids growing on them. If it's bad how can I safely remove it. I do have a 55 with only water in it, so if...

Does anyone have one? How's the growth rate? Do they take very long to start showing growth? Where should you place it in your tank? They say near the bottom and possibly in a bit of a shady area. They also say medium flow.
