Bought a Python; it "sucks" b/c it won't suck.

I can get the hosing plus faucet adapters for probably $10 at any hardware store which is all you need to be able to fill the tank - versus $30 for this thing. Plus I could probably buy longer hosing at the same time for that $10...so I took it back.

Bought a Python; it "sucks" b/c it won't suck.

I wound up returning it to the store (after calling the Python people). Initially the problem was that the connector between the pump and the faucet had air leaking out; I tightened that and then soon figured out that I don't have good enough water pressure. It has enough power (suction) to...

Bought a Python; it "sucks" b/c it won't suck.

I bought the standard 25' Python the other day and just got around to trying it tonight. I followed the instructions, and tried to use it - and I get no suction. Well, actually - I get about 2 seconds of suction, and then nothing. I've rechecked the connections, making sure things are tight...

    Can algae cause high nitrates?

I am a few days late on the PWC but I finally did it earlier tonight. Another 2/3 removed (added a little more since it was a few extra days between changes), tests: pH 6.4 Ammonia 0.5 (down .5) Nitrite 0 Nitrate 5 (down 2 colors from 20 the other day). Looks like once my Ammonia goes to 0, I...

    Can algae cause high nitrates?

The rest of the fish seem totally fine, including the one other rounded/bloated pink gourami I have. And yes I'm sure they're not normal pink kissing gourmi; those are elongated like regular gouramis. The guy I have is round and flat like a discus (about the size of a quarter) but he has the...

    Wal-mart & fish !

What do you expect? Walmart is not a pet store nor is it a fish specialty store; it's a "you can spend your money on damn near anything here" store. Do you really expect expertise from high school jocks or old hippies? Do you expect those sorts of people to know one iota about fish? It's rare...

    Can algae cause high nitrates?

Before doing all of this last night, my water was: pH 6.4 (I believe) Ammonia 0ppm Nitrite 0ppm Nitrate 160ppm So I didn't have any ammonia or nitrite before...obviously because it was old water I'm assuming...? As for the fish, I believe they're called bloated pink kissing gourami; I did a...

    Can algae cause high nitrates?

I retested the water. (All of these match my readings from last night; I think I was off 1 color on the Nitrates but it's still low now.) pH 6.4 Ammonia 1.0ppm Nitrite 0ppm Nitrate 20ppm 2 more of my bloated pink gourami are dying. Came home and they're breathing but motionless and...

    Can algae cause high nitrates?

Man, another slew of questions to answer. :) No, my pleco is fine; one of my golden chinese algae eaters died. As for the inch system, I just mentioned it to give an idea of how many fish I have (to dissuade the idea that I have an overstocked tank). As its already been said I doubt I killed...

    Can algae cause high nitrates?

D'oh... wish I would've seen this post last night before I did a water change/gravel vacuum. Ah well... Last night I decided to do a (very) thorough gravel vacuum. I removed everything out of my tank (except the fish and gravel of course), and gravel vac'd like I've never gravel vac'd before...

    Can algae cause high nitrates?

Yes, I followed the directions on them and shook them for the time it said to. (Put in 10 drops of bottle 1, mix good, shake bottle 2 for 30 seconds, add 10 drops of bottle 2, cap vial and shake for 1 min then wait 5 mins for results, etc.) I did all that. I have 11 fish in a 55 gal tank. 4...

    Can algae cause high nitrates?

Ok, here's my problem. I have high nitrates (160 ppm) that I've had for about a month to month and a half now. Initially, I didn't know much of anything about what to do about it. I started out by doing a gravel vacuum and a 35% (in total including what the vacuum took out) water change. I...

I need diagnosis help...is this a disease or just a bite?

What is a good timeframe to do this? Should I change one cartridge then wait a week and replace the other? (Or wait longer...?) TIA

I need diagnosis help...is this a disease or just a bite?

I know most aquarium hobbyists do routine water changes, but what I don't understand is how you say that replacing evaporated waster isn't a water change; I tend to disagree. You're replacing old water with fresh water; whether the old water evaporates or is taken out really doesn't matter...

I need diagnosis help...is this a disease or just a bite?

1~What type of fish is afflicted? In addition, please describe what is wrong with the fish to the best of your ability (i.e. cotton like growth, bloated, etc.). 1 blue gourami, he has what looks like a hole/bite mark in the side of his head that has blood in/near it edit: consequently I found...

    Warmer temps: good or bad?

Man this is such a n00b question I feel like a doofus  I know usual tank temp should be 78-80, and most people when they have an ich outbreak raise the temp to 82-85. After my last ich outbreak a year ago, I had seen some people saying they leave their tank temp around 82-85 all the time...

    I need fish "choice" advice

...for lack of better terms. HEY long time no post for me eh? Ok, here's the deal - my male betta passed away this weekend. I thought he was just hiding but when I checked thoroughly for him last night, I found him in the back of the tank, sleeping...peacefully...for good. :sniff: :cry...
