    Two Illnesses

I have a dwarf cory that is swimming upside down in a corkscrew pattern and a red eye tetra whose eyes just started to bulge. Obviously, something is not right. My water parameters in my 29 gallon tank are all fine except my nitrates which I discovered were high (80+) a couple weeks ago. I've...

    The Beginning of the End?

I'm worried my newish tank is starting to crash. PLEASE ADVISE! My tank is 8 weeks old. Did "fish in" cycle (with 3 platies) and a big bag of bacteria from a massive tank filter at LFS. Numbers were great after one week so I added 3 zebras. Probably too early but all went well. With the help...

    First Deaths

After 3 months of a healthy new tank I just lost two fish. The tank finished cycling last month (fish in) and I was so pleased that nothing died the whole time it was cycling. Yesterday, I came home to find a dead swordtail and, when I was getting it out of the tank, noticed a dead zebra, too...

    Bully Platy

After two months of domestic bliss, my male Sunset Fire Platy is bullying both females in my 29 gallon tank. I thought he was just being amorous but no...he constantly charges after them until they hide. Once, one of the females was so desperate to get away she crashed into the glass. Should I...

    API Test Kit Question

For weeks I've been having trouble getting my ammonia readings to zero. The color in the test tube isn't nearly as green as .25ppm but it's not as yellow as 0ppm, either. Water changes yielded no results. I've been using bottled spring water because my tap has high ammonia levels so I decided to...

    Cories or Oto Cats?

Does anyone have any advice on choosing between these two kinds of fish? The Cories seem useful for scavenging the bottom for sunken food but the Otos seem better at removing algae. I don't have any greet algae but I do have brown algae (diatoms?).

    Stocking Question

I've got a 29 gallon freshwater tank. Water paramaters are fine. Current occupants are: - 3 sunset fire platies - 2 gold twinbar platies - 6 zebra danios I'm considering getting red eye tetras or bloodfin tetras, both of which are schooling fish, so I'm assuming I should get at least 5. In...

    Fish Pimple?

I just noticed a small white bump above the eye of one of my platies. Other fish (2 platies, 6 zebras) look fine. Tank: 29 gal, 7 weeks old, started with bacteria from established tank Ammonia: <.25 (working on it) Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 10 pH: 7.4 What could it be and what should I do? FYI...

    Ammonia in tap water!

Pleae help. My 29 gal. freshwater tank was cycled. Then I did a water change (20%) and later noticed red gills on fish (3 platies, 6 zebras). Fish seem fine otherwise. Water showed .25 ammonia. Checked my tap water. To my dismay, it was 1.0 ammonia! What do I do? It has stayed .25 for 3 days...

    Scars on Zebra Danio

I have a Zebra Danio with strange marks on its back. Last week, when the first mark appeared, I thought it was the start of ich. But the marks aren't small and white, and they certainly don't look like sprinkled salt, as ich is sometimes described. A week later there are three marks, all near...

    Hardy Tetras?

I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank with 3 sunset fire platies and, soon, 8 zebra danios. I'm starting to consider my next additions and am deciding between: -lemon tetras; -balloon red eye tetras; or -pristellas but I'm open to other suggestions. I'm wondering which will stay the smallest and...

    Just Getting Started

I recently set up a 29 gallon freshwater tank. The friendly guy at my LFS offered to give me a bag of bacteria to "get me started." (He shook out a large filter from one of his tanks.) So, I started with three sunset fire platies (and the bag of bacteria) and never had the ammonia or nitrite...
