    Instant cycle - didn't work?

Just to follow up, I did another test last night before a water change and nitrites were 0. So looks like the instant cycle did work, just needed a couple of days to establish. I did a 25% water change anyway. All of my new additions are showing great colour, very active and eating well ? Sent...

    Instant cycle - didn't work?

Thanks for the response. So no need to panic? I'm thinking 25% water change every other day until there is no nitrite reading. What do you think? Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Sand substrate

Just my two cents worth - I have black Tahitian moon sand in my 125 gallon Malawi cichlid tank and whilst I love the look, I don't think it brings out the colours of my fish as much as a lighter substrate. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

And nitrates 0 - whoops, thought I'd missed something :) Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Instant cycle - didn't work?

I had an empty 55 gal tank so decided to use it to quarantine 5 new peacock cichlids. I cleaned the canister filter in tank water from my display tank (it had been running on the empty tank for about 4 weeks since I re-homed my daughter's goldfish). I filled the tank and added a sponge filter...

    New fish tank--advice needed!

You can isolate her to reduce her stress but some say that she may spit with the stress of being moved. I always leave my holding girls in the main tank which may explain why I am yet to have any surviving fry :( I believe that it takes a couple of goes before they will generally hold to term...

    New fish tank--advice needed!

Yes she is - you can tell when they're not eating and have the "pouch" under the chin. They usually show some interest at feeding time without actually eating. Congrats ?

    Goldfish with popeye

I've already done a 75% change and she's looking pretty perky ? No idea as to what caused it. Not overstocked (3 fancies in 55g), I do regular water changes and nitrates under 20ppm at all times and feed them veges daily. The only change is that I (stupidly) put some ornaments with sharp points...

Well I struck it out with Pimafix for the full 7 days and I think there's some improvement. The left eye still looks pretty bad and I'm wondering if she might be blind in that eye but the right eye is quite clear and the blister-like covering is starting to reduce. Water params were good -...

    Goldfish with popeye

Ok so Day 4 of Pimafix and her eyes appeared to be clearing up but have come home today to find her left eye appears to have "popped" and there is bloody tissue hanging out ? Not sure where to go from here. Big water changes??? Carbon to remove meds??? Or is this a part of the healing process...

Another 12 hours and she's continuing to improve although I'm not entirely confident that the Pimafix will cure her but rather is just alleviating the symptoms. Playing the waiting and watching game .....

Things are looking up! Both eyes are still protruding but are slightly clearer and less blood. Sylvia is perky, eating and swimming well and overall appears to be more comfortable. I gave the 2nd dose of Pimafix this morning and will continue to update on her progress.

Ok great - thanks! I'll see how she goes over the next 24 hours and if no improvement I'll try to get hold of the Myxazin ?.

I have found a local aquarium shop that sells Water Life Myxazin? Not having any luck finding tetracycline as yet.

I'll start my research now on those products. Thanks for the help - these goldfish are my daughters and she was devastated when we lost one to dropsy six months ago so I want to do anything in my power to save this one!!!

Oh and yes, both eyes are affected. The other fish are healthy and well. Really not sure what has happened here :(

Thanks for the reply JLK. I'm using metric measurements so works out to be 1tsp/2g. So far no adverse effects but after researching all night I haven't been sure what to do so I have gone ahead and added a dose of Pimafix as well. It (allegedly) helps with internal and external bacterial...

Back from the LFS who advised me to try salt and Pimafix. I bought it but still not sure how to proceed. Params in QT tank are: ammo 0, PH 7.8, nitrites 0, nitrates 5. I have just mixed up 3tbs of Epsom salts into some tank water and going to add it to the QT over the next 1/2 hour. Will post...

    Goldfish with popeye

Well no improvement overnight so I'm about to head to my LFS for some advice (hmmmm not sure about that). Thinking about trying Epsom salts before medicating but her right eye looks pretty huge and I'm worried that it will pop if I don't do something soon. I'll check params in the QT tank when...

1~What type of fish is afflicted? Oranda goldfish. White growths over both eyes, now bloody. No streaks in fins, no stringy poop, eating and swimming well. 2~What are your tank parameters: ammo 0, nitrites 0, PH 7.8, nitrates 20, temp 27C 3~ How large is the tank? How long has the tank...

    Total Die Off

My heart goes out to you! A couple of weeks ago I used a new ant powder to tackle my ant problem. It wasn't until later that I read on the bottle that it was highly toxic to aquatic life and at the time I was refilling my tank with a hose that I realised I would have dragged across the ant...

    filter help please

I second that. I have also never had an ammonia reading on either of my tanks since they cycled. The water is pristine and the silence is deafening lol. The biological filtration is great, it's easy to clean and easy to prime. They're a winner in my book but they are also the only canister...
