Heating during Winter / Cold Months

I had the two heater setup in my tank... and then I got an in-line heater with my canister. How do people handle those? Do you then have another heater hanging on the back? I got the in line to avoid that. I hate having all the things hanging inside the tank.

Help me pick a mid/high level fish!!!

One more question about rainbows. They are a schooling fish - but will they school with other species of rainbow? Like if I got 4 of them... 2 of 2 different species... would that work? Or should I stick to all one species of rainbow?

Help me pick a mid/high level fish!!!

After reading a bit about rainbows, I feel the problem I've had with them is that I haven't really seen any full grown full color ones. I've seen them a lot in pet stores, and have never seen any that are really "striking" to me. Sounds like the Congo Tetra. They always look kind of boring in...

Help me pick a mid/high level fish!!!

The Denisons - how many would i need to get? Is 3 enough for them to be happy? That's still a 75 dollar investment... and since I've never kept that fish before it makes me a bit nervous.

Help me pick a mid/high level fish!!!

Yeah. I'm worried about the dwarfs a bit too. I've got a lot of "caves" and things built in among the plants, and they seem to be mainly concerned with the territories they've created down there. But I agree- that is a concern. I think I just get overwhelmed when I go to look at fish. The fish...

Help me pick a mid/high level fish!!!

I've got a 55 gallon aquarium with a bunch of bottom dwellers (a few yoyo loaches, a bushynose pleco and four dwarf cichlids (kribensis x2 and apistogramma agasizzi x2). The aquarium is planted with eco-complete substrate. This tank has been set up for a few years - so it's cycled and...

How can I keep my Ciclids alive through my tanks Cycle??

I agree. Testing water parameters is essential. It helps you know when/how much of a water change you need. I don't think your fish are doomed. You can get through it, it's just going to take quite a bit of work...

How can I keep my Ciclids alive through my tanks Cycle??

There are a few things you can try that will definitely increase your odds of getting your fish through. Having a 40 gallon and only 6 fish will definitely help.... 1. Go to the pet store and get some fast growing live plants. They will help use up the ammonia in the water and add bacteria from...

    Baby Bristlenose!

It has definitely been an interesting experience with the two of them. I'd had fry from other fish before, but these have been by far the coolest. I saw the dad out foraging in the tank last night, and today he's back in with the babies... it can't be by accident. He's the only fish that seems...

    Python issues

Well... if you really want power... and the outside hose faucet is readily available.... for my 55 gallon I hook my python up to the outside hose faucet to empty it. You can vary the sucking power by how high you turn the water on - and you can drain the 55 gallon in minutes if you turn it on...

    Baby Bristlenose!

I'm not sure if anyone cares, but I'll keep sharing anyway. :) It looks like the dad comes and goes several times a day.... I'll go in and he'll be gone then come back later and he's back... I had some trouble with the 10 gallon, so I'm scared to put the babies in it now. I bought some live...

What do I do with the fish when I clean the tank?

The water temperature should be close - but I really wouldn't worry about it being exact. I don't think one or two degrees is going to be that big of a deal. If you're really worried though, you can get a large plastic bucket to "hold" the water in for a few hours before you change the water in...

    Baby Bristlenose!

So... there was another set of babies. I found them 2 nights ago. i have them in the floating breeder right now. So far, I've counted 15 of them. The two adults have been busy :) Anyway, again the father climbed into the breeder! I got a picture of him in there this time. I decided to leave him...

Toledo, OH baby bristlenose Free to good home!

I've got about 6 that will be available in a few weeks. They were an unexpected surprise. They're probably cheaper to get local if I have to ship them, so I'm hoping someone in the area would like a couple or a few. The mom is an albino longfin and the dad is a regular bushynose. They're about...

    Baby Bristlenose!

Ok - so I guess I'll leave him in the big tank... because I can't see the original cave (it's a hollow piece of cholla cactus wood that has plants attached to it/growing out of it - I can't even see the wood anymore). I just feel bad for him. I mean, he had to come up out of the water and...

    Baby Bristlenose!

Ok - do you think I should just get a PVC pipe or something? I was planning on transfering them later this afternoon. I wanted to check the water again and make sure everything was ok - and make sure the pH was comparable to the big tank (it should have settled by now). He won't eat the babies...

    Baby Bristlenose!

So - a very interesting thing happened last night. I have the babies in a plastic floating breeding tap similar to this one: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/pReviews_Image.php?n=1809200820261790_Marina_3_In_1_Fish_Breeding_Trap.jpg&w=150&h=150. The top edge is a couple inches...

    Baby Bristlenose!

It's been up for 6 months about 1/4 full of water. I haven't paid much attention to it, but wanted to keep some water in there because when I switch the big tank over to sand later this year, I wanted to have some snails for it. There are still living snails in there. lol. I usually check the...

    Baby Bristlenose!

The 10 gallon has had snails in it for... about.... 6 months now. MTS. That's why i put plants in it. It's obviously not cycled - the babies were a bit unplanned. Not much you can do in those situations. I have water testing supplies though. And, when this has happened before I've just put some...

    Baby Bristlenose!

Found 2 more!! I'm up to 2 now!! That's encouraging. Those little guys are FAST! I set up my 10 gallon, and I've had it running with some plants in it for a day and a half now. But the pH is like... 7.6 and it's about 6.6 in the big tank. So i think I may have to just replace the water in the 10...

    Baby Bristlenose!

Phaze - I guess it depends on how many you want! I still have only found the two but... I'm hoping more come out. I'll keep you updated on it.

    Baby Bristlenose!

Phaze - if I find more I'd send them to you for just the cost of shipping (you'd have to help me figure that one out too because I've never done it). I'm not sure if you still want them though because the father is not albino or longfin. The babies don't appear to be albino either. So they're...
