    Adopted a 55g - Maybe Oops?

Ah, ok. Well darn. Poor thing. Hopefully it will eat better and heal up or get over whatever is ailing it, soon.

It might be a little. I do stare at it every day so improvement would be less noticeable to me! Is that erratic shaking back and forth something to be concerned about?

Hello again! I’m still over here worrying about the severum. I managed to get a video of some of its worrying behavior. Any thoughts?

    Adopted a 55g - Maybe Oops?

Alrighty, thank you. The severum ate a few bits of the frozen mysis shrimp I got yesterday, yay! The angels of course were ALL over it. I did see it (about half an hour after) regurgitate a small cloud of it though...ai yi. :( Maybe it just got too excited and ate too much? I dived into the...

Ok well, my spidey senses must have been going off. :ermm: There is another white patch on the back fin, not the middle one but the upper one now. It doesn't appear to be fuzzy, but I suppose it could be...it just looks milky, really. Still just keep on with trying to feed it more and do water...

Haha! Ok then. So I should keep an eye on them and try to get it to eat better, and hope they go away. Got it!

It looks good?? Oh, yay!! I have been getting more and more worried about it, I just get so anxious about these guys and they act different than any of the other fish I've had (never had anything larger than a bristlenose until these). Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise! This...

Thank you for the food advice! I will get some more frozen food and maybe try to source some black worms. I don't think my LFS carries any but I'll ask! Pics attached! The white is much more pronounced in the pics than in real life, actually...eeek. :(

Hello! I'm back, as I knew I would be, with more questions and issues. Haha. The angelfish are doing great, no sign of eggs or anything despite many times of chasing, lip-locking, etc, which is fine, I'm not trying to turn into a fish breeder. Maybe they're the same sex, maybe conditions...

Oh, wow. Clearly all my google-ing led me astray, I thought the nuchal hump was a definite tell! Welp. Guess it's just wait and see. I'm both intrigued and invested now...maybe I'll get a piece of slate and put it in there, it would be really cool to watch them spawn (and maybe do that several...

    Adopted a 55g - Maybe Oops?

Hmmmm well I haven't seen any lip-locking behavior so I think the one is just a d!ck. I've been watching them a lot (because honestly it would be cool to have a spawning pair). My long term plan/hope is to make this an angel tank, but I was planning on getting a few juveniles to raise together...

So excited that the nitrate test finally looked more orange than red after this morning's WC. Guessing ~30 ppm. I noticed one of the angels being super aggressive towards the other immediately after the change so I'm thinking maybe wait until tomorrow morning to do another instead of doing it...

Mr. Pleco has been dropped off at my LFS, whoohoo! Progress. Getting him out was actually much less dramatic than I thought it would be, after seeing him splash around trying to go from bucket to tank before. Guess having a net the correct size really does make a difference. Imagine that. Also...

Thanks. Thanks for that. Now I'm still going to need to test before every WC just to satisfy my own curiosity. Rude. :P  Amazed at the uptick in activity after the waterchange this morning. Got a definite 80 ppm reading, phew. The severum and angelfish are all swimming back and forth...

Makes sense, I highly doubt it will be appreciably higher 12 hours after a WC. Thank you both for all your tips and advice! Here's hoping I can make this a happy, healthy and thriving tank! I'm sure I'll be back with either more questions and issues or updates. Hehe. :D

I am also completely shocked that all these seem to be healthy fish with the levels that high...I have only ever had small (20 g) tanks but I've never let the nitrates get above 20-30 ppm. I had assumed there would be some very detrimental effects with it so high, but I guess if they are...

    Adopted a 55g - Maybe Oops?

Hmm. Good to know about the nitrate pads and things but I think I would rather just do the water changes. This thing already has a much more complicated filter than I've ever had (a canister, Fluval 304) and I feel like I really don't need more stuff! Lol. I did a 25% water change a couple of...

    Adopted a 55g - Maybe Oops?

They used about 25 gallons of the original tank water, hence my guessing at about a 60% water change. It was moved yesterday morning so about...30 hours ago.
  19. Bent Needle

    Adopted a 55g - Maybe Oops?

Hmm. The substrate is some kind of reddish rock that was definitely...degrading, I guess? when it was moved yesterday all the water was tinted that color. I wondered if that could be part of the high reading but it has been 24 hours since the water change. Tested my tap water just in case but...

Record scratch, new problem update: I went to the fish store to see about surrendering the pleco, they said no problem they would be happy to take it. Whoohoo, problem solved (once I an get him out again, anyway). I also picked up a nitrate test kit since that was the only thing the original...

    Adopted a 55g - Maybe Oops?

Thank you for the advice/opinions! This is more or less what I was thinking, though I didn't know the algae eater could be so problematic. Guess I'm taking a trip to the store today to beg them to take a med-large pleco off my hands...haha!
  22. Bent Needle

    Adopted a 55g - Maybe Oops?

Holy...that thing is HUGE!!! Ok. I was also leaning towards taking the pleco in to my local store, maybe get a smaller variety or a couple of bristlenose (what I've had in my smaller tanks before). The algae eater is super pretty and not very big right now so I'd like to keep it unless size or...

    Adopted a 55g - Maybe Oops?

So, I'll try to make this as short as possible, but that's hard for me. TL;DR - I adopted my friend's husband's 55 gallon tank that he no longer wanted in their (admittedly tiny) house, and now I think there may be big problems with the stocking. From what my friend said it sounded...

    First blue ram :)

I have 3 platies and a bristlenose pleco. Tank has been set up about 2.5 months and I'm still working on the plants, so it'll be awhile before I can seriously think about getting one. :fish2:
