Reef Lighting, how many watts per gallon?

Pearsont74- when you talk about lighting with your LFS or fellow hobbiests you ask how much light do I need not how much power should I burn....in general the more power you burn the more light you get using like technologies e.g. 40w incadesent vs 60w or 40W NO fluorescent vs 110W HVHO but you...

Reef Lighting, how many watts per gallon?

if you consider a metal halide bulb to be about 1.5" in diameter and say 5" long and a t12 to be 1.5" in diameter.... the metal halide bulb's 9 bend reflector is around 12" by 10" by 5" high... you couldn't even put two VHO light bulbs on a 55 gal tank (assuming reflector being 48"x10"x5"...

Reef Lighting, how many watts per gallon?

for a t5 ho the reflector takes light from all sides of the bulb and shines it into the tank where as you can't use a parabolic reflector on a power compact bulb because the bulb is bent double and can't be in the focal point of the the parabolic reflector. Also the PC's ... what shines up gets...

take a jar and put 15 ml of 5%acetic acid white vinigar in it add 1/2 tsp of pickleing lime swirl until powder is disolved mix in quart of water and slowly add it to your tank (pickeling lime ph=about12 and raises your calcium and magnesium) you might get away with putting a quarter of a jar...

Reef Lighting, how many watts per gallon?

they say 6-8 watts per gallon, but different lights have different lumen output so the real question is how many lumens per gallon and at what light spectrum? say you use 48" VHOs (110Watts) rated at 5500 lumens then you decide on VHO internally reflected at 40% more output say 7700 lumens and...

Can someone explain why a protein skimmer needs broken in?

Frst, think of when you blow soap bubbles... when you touch them they pop. But if your finger is covered with soap they do not pop. The riser tube isn't coated in slim yet so the bubbles pop leaving some residue on the tube, as the slim coat works its way up the tube it will eventually reach...

here are two references for padding under your tank. they do not specify a manufactured tank of custom built tank.

    How big with 1/4" Glass?

oh yeah, that gap on the commercial tanks is there to replace the foam sheet. the glass is raised so irregularities of your stand don't interfere with the bottom glass but it is supported by all edges with the frame were as Garf's are not. I would not trust garf's design either.

    How big with 1/4" Glass?

You don't want the bottom of your tank to flex that is how they break. build your tank with the bottom down flat and all the sides glued on top. just besure to put a sheet of 3/4" plywood down and then a sheet of cork or styrofoam or closed cell foam down for your tank to sit on. I use a 1/2"...

Sea clone skimmer/this should be interesting

the air bubbles get coated with proteins and other DOC's etc. think of them as soap bubbles. the soap being DOC'c. when you blow soap bubles they fly around and bump into each other bouncing off each other and sometimes joining but not popping, but when you touch it it pops. if you dip your...

    Home depot shop lights

a 55 gal being 48x13x21 you could fit 6 lights a 2" on center starting 1" from the back. you would have to lift the whole thing up or make the front of the canopy fold up or down to get access, 6 bulbs aren't very heavy though.

I don't have any pictures but I'll try and explain. I have a glass cover sitting on my brace work. the braces are recessed down 1/2" so the galss cover sits below the top of the tank. the front 5" strip is hinged for feeding. the top of my tank has a wooden ring or band, if you will, just 1x6...

    How big with 1/4" Glass?

my tank is 48x24x24 but is only filled to 22" deep and has been up for 3years 8 months with no problems. It is made of .25" glass and silicone only and the only bracing is around the top just inside and is 1.5" strip of .25 glass siliconed to front and rear panes and both ends with one across...

what does 125 lbs of LR look like?

my 2 cents if your susbstrate is less than 1" then just pile in your rock on the bottom of the tank and fill up with substrate. if your substrate is 3" or more than you should prop up your base rock because if your gravel is course say 1.5mm and larger like crushed coral than you'll need to...

    Canister filter coughing microbubbles

I have a magnum 350 canister that does the samething once in a while. Believe it or not you have an air leak at one of your connections, even though you don't see a leak when you turn it off. On my canister it is usually the the hose that comes from the tank and the leak is one the the two...

Overflow "U" tube has air bubble that won't go awa

How many gallons per hour is your return pump returning to your tank? You may not have enough flow to use 2 siphon tubes because it sounds like you don't have enough flow to push the bubble out. Does it run fine with just the one tube by itself? If so just run one tube. My tank's return is...

    Home depot shop lights

I agree on the wastefull magnetic balasts that weigh alot too. but I bought 3 of the $19.00 fixtures and discarded the sheetmetal and mounted the guts straight to the canopy with the lights mounted 3" apart on center. you could mount them as close a 2" apart on center but getting rid of the...

    Home depot shop lights

why don't you just run two of the $7.00 fixtures and four of the 6700K bulbs. that will still give you 160 watts of light safely and spread it over a larger area of the tank.

idea for a cheaper deep sand bed

what I have read is silica sand in inert and the glass that the aquarium is made of is aqually or more so likely to cause a diatom bloom. Silica is not silicate just like calcite is not aragonite yet both are calcium. the only thing I've heard about silica sand is that there is no buffering and...

idea for a cheaper deep sand bed

after reading about deep sand beds on wet web media's website it looks like they want a minimum of 3" 4 to 6 is better. and that you can expect fine aragonite to dissolve at a rate of abut 50% in 24 months. I've decided to try this, 3" of silica sand (3.5" denitrates my freshwater tank and...
