No it grows just like that and very slowly until like a year being established then it starts to grow slightly faster. It's often said to look like poision ivy.
That is one of my favorite Auchenipterichthys coracoideus (Zamora woodcat)
They came out around midnight for me and hid all day. But they are awesome to watch in very low light, I believe they also like schooling but I cant remember for sure
He should be ok unless he had an illness prior to the attack. If he has more problems/symptoms post them and I could try to help or someone else can. I hope he gets better for you
