    Help ID'ing Algae

Thanks for the reply. I was running 2 x 18w Life Glo T8 tubes from 2pm to 11pm. Those are 6300K I believe. Algae was already there on this setup. I have since upgraded to 2 x 28W T5 lights at 10,000k, which is what came with the tank. I didn't want t5 so was using an older t8 hood as it would...

    Help ID'ing Algae

Hi Guys, Can anyone identify the below algae for me please, and what might be causing it? I've been battling it for weeks and all i can do to get rid of it is to remove the leaves. It has taken hold on some of my amazon sword leaves and i really don't want to cut them back and lose the leaves...

    Lighting

I would suggest 4K-6500K full spectrum lighting, not just fluorescent. Remember plants also need good nutrients and CO2 (depending on the plant type) to really thrive.

    Trigon 190 Lighting Advice

Hi All, I am currently running a standard t5 set up which came with my tank. I have recently switched to Juwel T5 High Lite Day bulbs, after reading bad reviews on the Hagen Power-Glo and Aqua-Glo combo i originally had. The reason for switching was extremely slow plant growth. I have been...

    Sick Red Eye Tetra

Hi All, I have a Red Eye Tetra who looks quite underweight, and has what looks like white patches over its body. It doesn't seem to be slime, just discoloration. None of the other fish in the tank are effected, including 4 sword-tails, 3 rainbow fish, and 10 neon tetras. I've not had the...

    Planting in sand

It really depends what kind of plants you are going to put in. Root feeders like Amazon Swords and alike, need to have a good 2-3 inches to establish their root system. As for planting them, remove the foam they come wrapped up in, cut back any dying roots and dig them deep but make sure the...

Sand, always the best option IMO.

Will my tank be instantly cycled?

I think its wise to wait approx 24 hours to let the water filter through if you are using brand new water. I wouldnt fill all of it up with brand new water as you could shock the fish. Remember thats the equivalent of doing a 100% water change

    backdrops?

I have a black background on my tank. Brings out any colour in the tank and has a really good effect :)

What kind of substrate do you reccomend?

I started with gravel but always had it going mouldy and looked unsightly. It was a light colour so didnt take long! Made the effort to switch to sand one night (moment of madness) and havnt looked back. Looks much more natural and have since put in amazon swords who love it.

    False Ammonia Readings

Done a few more tests recently and they have bee fine. Ammonia not moved from zero for a week. Still don't know what caused the reading! Test kit about 6 months old.

    Newbie alert!

Welcome to the forum. :) Do you have a planted set up, i.e. live plants? Tropical plants can take anything between 10-12 hours a day as they are used to the long light exposure. If you dont have plants, then anything goes really but i wouldnt really recommend anything over 12 hours as you may...

    Fish To Give Away

Hi All, Would anyone be interested in a Fishnet Flying Fox? He is outgrowing the tank and i want a different set up in terms of species. He is approx 3-4 inches and is doing quite well at the moment. He has recently been giving my tetras a hard time which isnt really his fault. I am in...

New member with crushed coral issues...

The filter will eventually clear it, but it wont be doing it any good as it deducts from the filters capability to filter the important stuff. My advice is take it out, wash, wash and wash again and then try it back in the tank.

    Ich help

6 fish in a ten gallon isn't overstocked, 4-5 more you can get in a ten gallon and that would be at its limit. One thing i would say though is that you need to get more of each species. Illness sets in when fish are stressed, so this may be the answer to why your fish are falling prey to ich.

    Immediate Help Please! High Nitrate

If you are using the API Master Kit, please bare in mind that these give high readings, purely because they are designed for test use in tanks with salt added. It says this in the manual, and other test kits will give readings 20-40% lower. Have a look at the instructions under testing for...

    Free To A Good Home

Hi All, I am in Winchester, Hampshire, UK, and would be giving away a fishnet flying fox. He is in very good health and is around 3-4 inches long at present. He is consistently chasing the red eye tetras and sadly we will need to let him go. I doubt the LFS would take him back now...

    False Ammonia Readings

Hi All I went to do a water test this evening using an API Test Kit, and to my horror the ammonia reading was coming out at 4.0PPM! I forgot to let the colours develop as i was preoccupied, so saw it was just over .25 and did the water change. Now, I dont think any of the fish in the...

vertical tilting molly behavior with new dalmation lyretail

She doesn't look pregnant at all. Molly's are a bit like Platys in that the way they do the deed, so the positioning isn't anything to do with sexual behaviour. It may well be a challenging prone, but I highly doubt it. Is she healthy in all other aspects and swimming healthily?

    Cloudy water.

Probably a bit much to be honest. Cut back to 8 and see if the water improves.
