I have a wp40 with the second generation controller as well. I built a wave box for mine and I haven't had any problems out of it. One of the best purchases I have made in this hobby.

An excessive build up is not desirable. You would not want to use any more than is needed to keep your levels stable. Your system will also precipitate out the calcium if your magnesium is low so you would want to keep a check on that as well.

I have 3 reef tanks. A 125 gallon Peninsula, a 10 gallon in my bedroom, and a 5 gallon Fluval spec tank in my son's room. I do all of my water changes at the same time and I can do it in about an hour.

A maxi-jet would work. You just want to get the surface gunk moving around so it can get skimmed off by your overflow box. You could try moving your return lines if they can be moved first. I have mine pointed towards the surface in my tank, but my wavebox does most of the water movement.

Is your drain inside an overflow box though? I would try a powerhead pointed toward the surface aimed toward your overflow to force the surface water into it. Sometimes if your return comes from the same place as your overflow it can keep the surface water away from it. Hopefully you can...

I go there quite often. I used to work directly across the street from there. I go to Nemo's in Charlotte too. They are all saltwater and have great prices on fish and corals. Thanks!
