    start to cycle

Salmo is partially correct. LR added to a uncycled tank will have more die off (as ammonia rises) than would LR added to a cycled tank... But ANY LR is a good thing. You don't have to have the filter to start, but it will help to add later. If you haven't bought the HOB filter don't buy...

Ditto, I didn't rinse my sand either, it is purely preference.

    Cool and disgusting!

Congrats, you may have a mantis shrimp (by the way you describe it) which may pose a problem for you down the road... Google mantis shrimp and look to see if that is what you have. They can be pretty predatory and kill expensive tank mates...

    Please Help ... Thanks !!!

If you did you would probably have a lot of die off since the Atlantic ocean (around England) is cooler than typical saltwater tanks...

Ditto, you CAN find 100% silicone at store such as HD (just read the labels).

    Purple up???

Check your calcium levels as well as your alk and let us know what they are... Coraline algae is calcium dependent (for the most part), but you need to have seed to start (such as your LR).

    lights for my 30 gallon

Cool, If I am not mistaken the odyssea products are made in China (like Jebo). It is a good price for the amount of light that you are getting. Give it a try and let us know what you think...

    Advice needed

If you dont have any fish or livestock yet I would get the LR. You really don't need lighting to cycle your tank. Plus putting the rock and sand in the tank will reduce the amount of water you have to use in the tank and you won't waste any saltwater... Depending on what kind of lighting you...

    starting with all the setup

Don't cycle with your skimmer (leave off until your are cycled). I would add your sand first, then the salt and water (doesn't have to be premixed since you don't have any fish. Turn on your circulation (maxi jets and filtration (no carbon)), add a couple of cocktail shrimp and then add the lr...

Amonia is on the rise. What gives?

IMHO skimmers provide little water circulation. The emperor probably does provide more than 100 gph, but I wouldn't believe that it provided 400 gph of circulation when the filters get clogged even a little (and the 400gph may be the rating without the filter pads), emperors are good filters by...

Amonia is on the rise. What gives?

For a 58 gallon tank you need at least 580 gph. With your ph you have 230 and your emperor probably put out around 100 gph. I would get at least another maxijet (1200) for circulation. I doubt very seriously that your ammonia spike was due to a chemical introduction (unless you were...

    fish completely dissapeared

I agree they do hide in hole in the LR... Probably where it hid (from stress). You may want to acclimate a little slower (float the bag for about 15-30 min.) by using 1/4 cup or 1/2 at most and then over an hours time add water to the bag in 10-15 min intervals.

Leave the algae on the tank... You might want to consider a couple turbo snails though to help with algae control. I have my lights on 13 hrs a day on a timer switch...

Amonia is on the rise. What gives?

I don't understand the bio-wheel swap program... The biowheel itself is a bio-filter, and if you used it from one of their tanks in order to "propogate" your own tank and then removed it you would NORMALLY have a ammonia spike. What kind of circulation are you using? What kind of filtration...

I would believe pwc would be best to get any soap chemicals out of the tank (as well as using activated charcoal).

    Filter Media Question

The white flakes are buildup in your tubes as you said (I have a Fluval 104) and it will happen anytime you bump the hoses (Unless you brush them out routinely (I don't)). Make sure you rinse off those ceramic cylinders frequently and replace the other media with your choice of material (and...

    Skimmer Question

Depends on the filter, some, like the HOB penguins with the biowheel, you want running (to build up colonies on the wheel). Others, such as a canister you may want to wait until you have your tank cycled. It also depends on the amount of LR and circulation you have... Give us your specifics...
