    Transferring koi fish

Looks like I've been over-reading too many articles about the requirements of transferring koi. Cecibella123, I think you're right about them being very hardy. When I got to the site, I had my test kit with me. The landscape manager said he's never had anyone test the water when people donate...

    Transferring koi fish

I'll be donating my 3 koi fish to a huge public koi pond. They currently live in 425 gallons. The pond they'll be moving to is 10's (maybe hundreds) of thousands of gallons. Do I need to be concerned about the clarity of the water, or could a drastic change be harmful? My little pond has very...

Help! Koi dying during water change!

A couple of weeks ago, I received a message in my email inbox (can't remember whether it was from this forum or somewhere else), from an individual who commented that they had a pond for several years and learned a lot in keeping it clean, and they shared their personal email address with me for...

Help! Koi dying during water change!

Thanks. The fountain I have actually does have a filter attached to it. I think it does a pretty good job in picking up a lot because everytime I rinse it, there's a lot of debris. I think that the pond problem happened while I was on vacation because I had asked my neighbor to feed them...

    New found appreciation

I know the feeling, Niki! Couple years ago, I got a 55-gal tank, planning to stock it with a variety of cool, tropical fish. The owner of the tank said that he'd flush the kois down the toilet if I didn't take them with the tank. I had never cared or thought of having kois, but I really wanted...

Help! Koi dying during water change!

Yes, my pond has a fountain (even though I accidentally called it a waterfall in my posting). Anyway, my fish sprung back to life several hours later, as if nothing happened! Now I just want to prevent my pond from ever getting that dirty again to the point that I need to do a complete...

Help! Koi dying during water change!

I'm not sure if I used the right terminology when I said that I use "conditioner" in my pond. It removes chlorine and chloromine (not sure if that's the same thing as a conditioner. The PH level for our local water is about 7-8 (neutral or slightly alkaline).

Help! Koi dying during water change!

Since the last time I posted, I've upgraded to a 450 gal pond for my 2 kois, algae eater, and corey catfish. Kois are about 10". They moved to their pond several months ago, and have been doing great. I use a water conditioner. I came home from vacation, and water was really dirty...

    Corey's in a Pond?

That is such a relief to hear! Thank you! I was also pleasantly surprised tonight when I took my first temperature reading. I thought it might be too cold for the Corey's, but it was 74 degrees, so I think they'll be fine temperature-wise too.

    Corey's in a Pond?

I'm currently building a pond to upgrade my 2 koi's home. They're now in a 55-gal tank with 2 Corey's (one albino...and not sure what the other one is) and one pleco. I live in HI where temperature is mild year-round, and I read that Corey's ideal temp is in the 70's (and pleco's even have a...

    My Mischievous Koi

I just wanted to share a story about 1 of my crazy kois that has quite a personality. A few days ago, I was gazing at my kois, when one of them started making a strange face with his mouth. He had me worried because he looked like he was choking. Sure enough, a small rubberband popped out of...

If water looks clean, does it mean that it really is clean and doesn't need changing?

Today is the 3rd weekend with no water change. I did a water test on 6 conditions (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, hardness, alkalinity, and ph). According to the charts, everything is normal, but not sure about PH and alkalinity. Chart says they're high (300 alkalinity and 8.5 ph), but doesn't say...

Hood light with 2 separate bulbs

Marineland lights I got 2 Marineland ML Double-Bright LED lights, 18"-24" about a month ago. So far, I'm very pleased with it. I probably should have got the 24"-36" though. My tank is 48" and my light attachments are only around 18" each, so I have the extension bars out on each end to fit on...

If water looks clean, does it mean that it really is clean and doesn't need changing?

Thanks, Everyone. I will try out the API Master Kit as you recommend. Been reading up on it. Lot of great reviews, and good idea for a beginner like me. I think this kit will really tell me if my aquarium is as balanced as it looks. I'd like to believe that my clean-looking tank is due to a...

If water looks clean, does it mean that it really is clean and doesn't need changing?

I'm a new fish owner, almost 3 months now, of a 55 gal home for 2 kois and 1 algae-eater (I realize that this will be too small for them someday, but I wanted the tank, and the previous owner said that he'd flush the kois down the toilet if I didn't take them). Anyway, I've been putting off...

Hood light with 2 separate bulbs

Thanks for all the advice! I ended up getting the MarineLand. It gives just the look I was going after, especially with my volcano bubble-maker. And best of all, my fish seem so relaxed with it. I was wrong with my comment "I know that fish and plants prefer the regular light..." Now I think...

Hood light with 2 separate bulbs

Hello. I read in another blog about a person who had a tank with 2 bulbs, 1 clear, 1 dark blue, and a switch where he could turn on either one. Does anyone know what brand that is and where I can find it? I'd like two 24" inch hoods (for my 50 gallon tank). I know the fish and plants like the...
