Yes a skimmer will definitely help. it removes nutrients and proteins from the water before they break down into nitrates and phosphates that fuel the algae

You probably wouldn't have to replace them like t5s either right?

What do you have in the tank already? I would get a mandarin goby if you don't already have one. There beautiful but I think they only eat live Copepods. I've always wanted one but my tanks not big enough.

Thanks for pointing that out. I researched lighting a bit and it seems like what matters more is the type of lighting rather than wattage. 6 T5 HO at 24 watts each in my little 10 gallon would be over 14 watts per gallon that's just over kill. I would think that would be bad for my fish lol
