    planted tank for a beginner

The hairgrass and tears are considered high light, co2 recommended plants. From what i understand, they'll survive in moderate light with no co2,but they won't really grow. java fern and anubias are GREAT low light plants, and there are a couple different looking options in each type.

I need better lighting. Should I double my LED strip or go new?

There's plenty of depth under the canopy, but the canopy walls are flush with the tank, so if the lighting had a flange it couldn't rest outside the tank lip, if that makes sense.

I need better lighting. Should I double my LED strip or go new?

My budget isn't exactly set. I'd like to keep it around $150, but if I have to spend a little more for a better lighting setup, I would consider it. The current setup has a nice canopy on the top as well, which may or may not limit my lighting to fixtures that could be mounted. The current...

    Help with plant care/fertilization

Flourish Excel has directions on the bottle that say to dose every other day. Some people on here (myself included) prefer to do a half-dose daily. I don't have any experience with crayfish specifically, but I have had two bamboo shrimp for two weeks and they're doing great.

What's the Deal With This Clear "Film" Inside the Tank Walls?

Is this the same stuff that floats on the top of the water? I have a film that gathers along the surface of the water. I have my spray bar on one side of the tank, pushing water across the length. The parts that are moving you can see the film is not there, but it settles on the far end of the...

    Controlling brown algae

I had the same problem with my 75g planted tank that's been up a few weeks. It looked like rust all over one of the plants and driftwood. I added 5 Otos and two Nerite snails and the NEXT DAY most of the algae had disappeared. I think the Otos were mostly responsible for the work, you could...

    Algaefix fish killer?

Anything that's designed to kill something that's living is dangerous. If your water numbers were good and then all of a sudden your fish died after the AlgaeFix, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that something in there directly (or indirectly) was to blame. If it killed a bunch of algae at...

    Cory question

I had a cory that had an eye eaten. He still had one, but losing one didn't seem to affect him in the slightest.

    Interesting Java Fern Leaf

It doesn't look deformed in that sense. I looked closer at it today and two of the other plants from that bunch have a second fork, but not a third. This one looks really symmetrical and looks like the plant is supposed to be that way.

    Interesting Java Fern Leaf

Same leaf. Only that leaf. It looks like a trident java fern leaf but it's the size of a normal java fern.

Will the ammonia neutralized by prime still show up on the test reading? Would an ro system solve the problem for the future?

    Ammonia in my tapwater

So i purchased a 75 g tank used and was able to keep everything wet and cycled. I was adding ammonia daily and getting 0 readings on ammonia nitrite and nitrate was low for a full week. I assumed the cycle was good and strong so i added 10 cories and 9 praecox rainbows. The day i brought the...

Hey guys, I bought a 75 gallon (tall) tank off craigslist which had the following lighting in it. BlueLine 24" 18w White VHO LED Strip :: LED Lighting Systems :: Lighting :: Champion Lighting & Supply It's got 36 LEDs, so it's the 48" variety on that page. The info says it's only 36 W of...

    Cascade Canister Filters

Hey guys! Looking to buy a tank used from someone and it has a Cascade canister filter. I've only ever had Fluval and have heard of Eheim, but never heard of Cascade. Anyone have experience with these? Are they solid or should I be wary? Also, what is the recommended GPH/Gallon ratio...

Fishless Cycling in a Planted Tank

Hey guys! I'm getting back into fish-keeping after a few year hiatus. I'm going to be putting together a 75 gallon planted tank for my dad. I've always done fish-in cycling in the past, but I'd like to try fishless this time around. What I want to know, is how plants affect the cycling...
