    Bio-Wheel -- What's the big deal?

Maybe a dumb question. On my newly re-started 55 gal tank, do I REALLY need to use my bio-wheels? I have an emperor 400 filter, with 2 bio-wheels. I've heard conflicting opinions on whether or not I need them. At this present time, I have no live rock.

    Sand

Similarly, I've had a lot of people suggest that I get rid of my crushed coral substrate, and get sand instead. I have 210 lbs of Tube Sand (for your car) in my basement. Can I use this sand, or would this be bad for my tank? Link to posts recommending ditching CC

    Dead Tank. Starting anew.

Thanks for the welcome. I have a 55 gallon tank with about 4 inches of crushed coral evenly distributed throughout. I have a Penguin BioWheel 330 (2 BioWheels and 2 carbon filters.) I had live rock, but I think we can rest assured that anything that was once on my live rock is no longer with us...

    Dead Tank. Starting anew.

Also, should I buy new Bio-wheels, or is there a way to salvage the bio-wheels that I have? (although they were completely dried out for 3 months). Who knows what bacteria may have developed while the water sat and stagnated.

    Dead Tank. Starting anew.

I have a 55 gal tank that I had established for about 20 months. A couple months ago I got sick for several weeks and let the tank get really bad. The tank has since completely died and has not had the filter/bio-wheels/or heater going for about 3 months. I would now like to start the tank back...
