    Just an update: The Tetra HT30 100W submersible heater rated for 10-30 gallon aquariums has heated my 5 gallon tank to about 76 degrees after 48 hours. I guess that will be good enough, not great. Thank you all for your advice.

    Thanks everyone~ Oooh, I don't know anything about whether or not the main electrical panel wired with a gfci. I just bought another Tetra submersible, but one rated for up to 30 gallon tank for my 5 gallon tank. The pet stores I visited today did not have adjustable heaters. I hope this one...

    Malisa_, DavidAl, MartyA, Betagal, Yes, I have tried several outlets. I trust my thermometer as I have tested it by other means. I have never turned one on outside the water. I have tried them in buckets with cold water to see if they make the water heat up all. These are all one-setting...
