Fish keep dying - high nitrates?

I will do more water changes. And another thing... I've used Amquel, but at my lfs, they tell me that it binds the nitrates and nitrites, and therefore doesn't change the readings, but it's safe for the fish. If this is true, how do I know what my readings really are???

Fish keep dying - high nitrates?

It's a whisper power filter model 20. I don't know what the GPH is, it doesn't tell me.

Fish keep dying - high nitrates?

I do a water change probably twice/month. Vacuum the gravel and change the filter once/month. I'm not sure as to the gph, or the actual brand. I feed twice/day.

Fish keep dying - high nitrates?

I have not been able to lower my nitrate and am wondering if that is what's causing fish to die. My 20 gallon tank has been set up for a year. I initially started with three striped danios, and I STILL have two. I added 2 angels earlier this year, and they seem to be doing fine. I added two...

    Seashells to Freshwater Tank

Any advice on adding seashells, freshly plucked from the Atlantic, in a 20 gallon freshwater tank? I've been told to wash them in hot water, and then soak them in treated water before placing them in the tank. I'm still concerned about salt or other chemicals leeching into the water.

    Green Water is CURED!!! Finally!!!

Mine is still clear. I used the 2.1 oz bag of Phosguard ($7) for 4 days on my 20 gallon tank. It didn't go away until I did a 30% water change, a few days later. And again, soft water this time.

    Green Water is CURED!!! Finally!!!

Mine is getting clearer every day. I can finally see the background on the back of the tank!! I still think it has something to do with our hard/soft water. Our water softener ran out of salt in early February, just about the time this algae problem cropped up. Now we have soft water again...

    Green Water is CURED!!! Finally!!!

:D So is mine!!! It still didn't look much different after I pulled the phosphate medium, so I took a sample to LFS, and everything tested ok. Unfortunately he dumped it before I could ask for the phosphate test. He suggested a 30% water change, so I did. Lo and behold, it's gone!! I can...

    Green Water is CURED!!! Finally!!!

Ok, me again. Still green. Used PhosGuard for four days. I will probably get another water test tonight, and then do another PWC, and then a blackout. Maybe I'll try another pet store...

    Green Water is CURED!!! Finally!!!

Ok, I could be wrong. It may have been 2.0.... It seems to be working (the medium). It is definitely less green. We'll see over the next couple of days.

    Green Water is CURED!!! Finally!!!

I tried the blackout for 3 days - and it did help some, but obviously there is something else going on. Had the water tested last night - ammonia, .25; nitrates 40 ?; nitrites, zero; and phosphates .2. Funny they don't normally test phosphates unless you ask. Anyway, I got that medium and...

    Green Water is CURED!!! Finally!!!

In another post, I see that someone recommended a total blackout. So, figured I had nothing to lose. I taped dark green towels around my tank, but left the top open just by the filter for air flow. It's been two days, and I did peak today, and it still looks just as green. I think the...

    Green Water is CURED!!! Finally!!!

Pea Soup Algea Problem I just found this thread, as I am having the same problem for a few weeks now. I've had my tank set up since about 8/1/04, and it's been fine until recently by doing just 20% water changes once/month. Three weeks ago, the lfs recommended 40% water change, and adding Bio...
